UTEP's Sean Kugler first college football coach to leave his job this season
The Miners are off to an 0-5 start, and Kugler decided his time was done
The 2017 season has claimed its first head coach.
UTEP announced on Sunday afternoon that coach Sean Kugler has stepped down and will no longer lead the program.
"After meeting with coach [Bob] Stull and discussing my future and the future of this program, we mutually agreed the best thing is for me to step down as head coach," said Kugler in a release. "My love for UTEP is in my heart forever, and my love for all the players that I have coached here is even stronger."
UTEP lost to Army 35-21 on Saturday, falling to 0-5 on the season.
Kugler was in his fifth season with the Miners, and although there were signs of promise early in his tenure as the team went 7-6 in 2014 and reached the New Mexico Bowl, they've gone 9-20 since. Kugler's overall record in El Paso, Texas, is 18-36 with a mark of 11-22 in conference play.
Kugler was hired at UTEP following the 2012 season as a replacement for Mike Price. He had been an offensive line coach with the Steelers before getting the UTEP job but began his coaching career with the Miners as a graduate assistant in 1993.
Kugler played at UTEP as an offensive lineman from 1984-88.
UTEP will hold a press conference on Monday to announce its plans going forward.
