The White Sox selected Ellis' contract from Double-A Birmingham on Tuesday.
Ellis receives a promotion after slashing .258/.341/.308 with 34 stolen bases at Birmingham. The 26-year-old is getting a look amid a rash of injuries in the White Sox' outfield, although he would still figure to be down in the pecking order for playing time.
