• Dodgers' Gavin Stone: Facing multi-week shutdown

  Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Tuesday that Stone was diagnosed with inflammation in his right shoulder after undergoing an MRI and will be shut down from throwing for at least a couple weeks, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. The 27-year-old will have a delayed start to the season, but it's encouraging that the MRI showed no structural damage after he suffered a setback with his surgically repaired right shoulder. Assuming Stone is able to ramp his throwing program back up after a couple weeks, he could be fully cleared before the end of April. He could be ticketed for Triple-A Oklahoma City once healthy.

Stone was already expected to miss the entirety of the 2025 season after undergoing right shoulder surgery in October, so his move to the 60-day IL was an expected one. The transaction cleared a spot for Enrique Hernandez to join the 40-man roster after the Dodgers and Hernandez officially agreed on a one-year, $6.5 million contract Tuesday.

Stone landed on the 15-day injured list Sept. 6 due to right shoulder inflammation. The Dodgers' rotation is short-handed with Clayton Kershaw (toe) and Tyler Glasnow (elbow) also on the IL, but Stone at least has taken a step in the right direction with the playoffs just around the corner. Stone has an 11-5 record across 25 starts this season with a 3.53 ERA and 1.21 WHIP across 140.1 innings.

  The Dodgers placed Stone on the 15-day injured list Friday due to right shoulder inflammation. The Dodgers' rotation has taken another blow with Stone set to miss at least the next two weeks. The 25-year-old right-hander last pitched Saturday against the Diamondbacks, allowing five runs on five hits and one walk while striking out four across five innings in a no-decision. Stone felt discomfort after that start, and it's unclear whether he will return this season, per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. For the season, Stone is 11-5 over 25 starts with a 3.53 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 116:37 K:BB across 140.1 innings. Justin Wrobleski was recalled by the Dodgers from Triple-A Oklahoma City in a corresponding move, and he will likely start Saturday against the Guardians in Stone's place.

However, the right-hander began to struggle in the fifth, giving up hits to two of the first three batters he faced before eventually being relieved by Alex Vesia with two outs in the frame. It marked the second start in a row in which Stone was unable to make it through five innings, and he's now surrendered at least three runs in three straight outings. Stone has also coughed up at least one home run in six consecutive starts, posting a 19:7 K:BB over that stretch.

  Stone (9-5) allowed five runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out five over four-plus innings to take the loss Friday versus the Athletics. Stone gave up multiple home runs for the second start in a row, as Shea Langeliers and Seth Brown each took him deep for solo shots in the fourth inning. Stone stayed in for the fifth, but he couldn't get an out, and Joe Kelly also allowed an inherited runner to score on a two-run home run by Brent Rooker. This was the fourth time in five outings that Stone has given up at least four runs. He now has a 3.63 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 87:31 K:BB across 111.2 innings through 20 starts this year. Walker Buehler (hip) will require another rehab start, so Stone is likely to get at least one more turn through the rotation, which is tentatively projected to be at home versus the Phillies. With River Ryan pitching well in his first stint in the majors, Stone's place in the rotation over the remainder of August is up in the air.

  Stone (9-4) took the loss Friday as the Dodgers fell 5-0 to the Astros, giving up four runs on nine hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out three. The Los Angeles offense couldn't get anything going against Framber Valdez and the Houston bullpen, but Stone didn't help his cause by serving up long balls to Alex Bregman and Jon Singleton. The right-hander managed to last six innings for the first time in four July starts, but his 6.27 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 12:5 K:BB through 18.2 innings on the month are still rough. His spot in the rotation is safe for now, but once Walker Buehler (hip) is ready to return, Stone could be fighting for one job with River Ryan and Justin Wrobleski, and that's before considering any trade deadline additions for the team. Stone is scheduled to make his next start on the road next weekend in Oakland.

Meanwhile, Stone has been excellent in surrendering just one run over 5.2 innings with a 4:1 K:BB, so he's probably the frontrunner between the two. This was Stone's first scoreless outing in the majors, and just the second time he's allowed fewer than four runs. He's at a 9.45 ERA, 2.03 WHIP and 17:11 K:BB through 26.2 innings over seven appearances. He may continue to work in some sort of piggyback role with Yarbrough, though Clayton Kershaw's workload is also being managed to close out the regular season. In any case, Stone should next be available to pitch near the end of the upcoming week.
