  • Padres' Manny Machado: Lifts homer in win

Machado went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and a third RBI in Wednesday's 5-1 win over the Dodgers.

This was Machado's fifth homer of September, and it ended up being all the Padres needed for the win Wednesday. The third baseman has added 13 RBI while batting .200 this month. On the year, he's hitting .218 with a .713 OPS, 29 homers, 87 RBI, 81 runs scored, 22 doubles and five stolen bases. Machado has as many as four games to push for the 30-homer mark, which he hasn't reached since 2023.

  • Robbie Ray SP | SD

Padres' Robbie Ray: Short outing against Dodgers

Ray allowed one run on seven hits and a walk while striking out two over 3.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Wednesday.

Ray's short outing came down to inefficiency -- he needed 84 pitches (55 strikes) to get the 10 outs. It's been a bumpy September for the veteran lefty, who has allowed 14 runs over 16.2 innings with a 14:11 K:BB this month. His regular season is likely done at a 13-8 record with a 3.59 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 140:84 K:BB over 31 games (30 starts) between the Padres and the Giants. Ray is lined up to pitch in the wild-card series in the likely event the Padres secure a playoff spot.

  • Joe Musgrove SP | SD

Padres' Joe Musgrove: Playing catch, return TBD

Musgrove (elbow) has been regularly playing catch, but the timeline for a potential return to action remains unclear, MLB.com reports.

Musgrove has yet to pitch for the Padres this season. as he's struggled to recover from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in October of 2024. The veteran hurler fared mostly well during a four-game minor-league rehab stint in August, but he was ultimately pulled off the assignment because he was having trouble recovering between starts. There's still a chance San Diego could activate Musgrove to see what he can give them, but he'd be limited to a relief role if that were to happen.

  • Padres' Miguel Andujar: Participates in live batting practice

Andujar (wrist) took live at-bats at Petco Park on Monday, MLB.com reports.

Andujar had been rehabbing with Triple-A El Paso before the club's season ended Sunday. Over nine games with the Chihuahuas, Andujar slashed .306/.316/.444 with no homers, five doubles, five RBI and a 1:4 BB:K. It appears the veteran infielder/outfielder is at the end of his recovery, but it remains to be seen if San Diego will make room for him to be activated from the IL before the end of the season.

  • Gavin Sheets 1B | SD

Padres' Gavin Sheets: Takes live at-bats

Sheets (foot) took part in live batting practice Monday, MLB.com reports.

Sheets has been sidelined for over three weeks but is trying to make a return before the end of the season. If the veteran slugger does manage to get back on the field, he's expected to be limited to DH and pinch-hitting duties. Prior to getting hurt, Sheets posted a .211/.313/.388 slash line with 16 homers, 46 runs, 46 RBI and four stolen bases over 123 games.

  • JJ Wetherholt 2B | STL

Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt: Three hits in win

Wetherholt went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 5-1 win over the Pirates.

Wetherholt provided the Cardinals with a steady presence at the plate, reaching base four times and scoring the first run of the game off of a Alec Burleson single. The rookie has gone 6-for-20 (.300) since being activated from the injured list (wrist) on September 16. He's closing out a productive rookie campaign with a .710 OPS, 17 home runs, 14 stolen bases and 51 RBI over 136 games and providing excellent defense at second base.

  • Brandon Lowe 2B | PIT

Pirates' Brandon Lowe: Only run in loss

Lowe went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 5-1 loss to the Cardinals

The 32-year-old supplied the only offense for the Pirates when he crushed a Matthew Liberatore pitch nearly into the Allegheny River. This was Lowe's 34th home run of the year, which is his most since the 2021 season when he hit 39 for the Rays. Lowe has been hot in September, slashing .338/.413/.620 with two doubles, six homers, 12 RBI and 12 runs.

  • Cardinals' Matthew Liberatore: Secures first win since July

Liberatore (6-14) gave up one run on six hits and no walks while striking out six over 5.2 innings to earn the win Wednesday versus the Pirates.

Liberatore picked up his first victory since July 11, which came against Atlanta just before the All-Star break. During the winless stretch, the left-hander tossed 61.1 innings with a 5.58 ERA and 1.45 WHIP with eight losses in 11 outings. The 26-year-old pitched great Wednesday in Pittsburgh, with the only damage against him coming via a solo homer by Brandon Lowe. It was Liberatore's final start of the campaign, and he'll end 2026 with a disappointing 5.23 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 154:55 K:BB across 155 innings.

  • Kevin Gausman SP | CHC

Cubs' Kevin Gausman: Battling shoulder injury

Manager Craig Counsell said after Wednesday's loss to Miami that Gausman is dealing with left shoulder soreness, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Gausman's shoulder was extended awkwardly as he dove to tag a runner out at third base in the sixth inning. He was removed from the game immediately afterward, though the fact that his pitch count had reached 101 at that point may also have factored into Counsell's decision to take him out. The Cubs will monitor his status over the next couple of days before determining his status for the wild-card round.

  • Kyle Stowers 1B | MIA

Marlins' Kyle Stowers: Cranks two-run homer

Stowers went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Cubs.

Stowers pushed his hitting streak up to four games with the homer. The slugging first baseman has now left the yard in back-to-back games as he tries to end a somewhat disappointing campaign for Miami on a high note. After submitting a .912 OPS for the Marlins in 2025, Stowers is slashing .240/.331/.460 with 21 long balls, 65 RBI and 57 runs scored over 511 plate appearances in 2026.
