Mavericks' Deron Williams: To undergo surgery

Williams will undergo offseason surgery to repair the sports hernia that kept him out of most of the final three games of the Mavs' first-round series against the Thunder, Eddie Sefko of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Williams suffered the injury near the end of the regular season then aggravated it in the Mavs' Game 2 win, in which he scored 13 points and added five assists in 26 minutes. Williams went on to sit out Game 3 and return for Game 4, but he was forced out of the contest early in the first quarter after re-aggravating the injury. The 31-year-old was subsequently ruled out for Monday's Game 5, which the Thunder won to advance to the second round. Williams told the media at his exit interview Tuesday that he'll undergo surgery in about a month, as he'll need time to rest muscles in the abdominal area before the procedure can take place. After undergoing the procedure, Williams will require six-to-eight weeks to recover, which should allow him to return to full health by August. The former All-Star holds a $5.6 million player option to return to the Mavericks next season, and while he indicated that he'd like to be back, Williams has yet to make up his mind.
