Maher signed a reserve/future contract with the Cardinals on Tuesday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports. Maher signed to the Cardinals' practice squad on Christmas Day and will now get an opportunity to stick with the team throughout the offseason. Veteran kicker Zane Gonzalez is slated to enter free agency this offseason, which could open the door to Maher in the future.
The Cardinals signed Maher to the practice squad Friday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports. Zane Gonzalez (back) is out for the rest of the regular season, and Mike Nugent has taken his place as the Cardinals' starting kicker in the meantime. Nugent has been perfect, hitting all five field-goal attempts and all six extra-point tries, so Maher is merely an emergency kicker option as the Cardinals make their playoff push. The 31-year-old played 13 games for Dallas last year, connecting on 20 of 30 field-goal attempts and all 36 extra-point tries.
Maher visited the Buccaneers on Tuesday, Albert Breer of TheMMQB.com reports. Maher was cut from the Texans' practice squad Monday. He could immediately fit in with the Buccaneers, who currently have kicker Ryan Succop on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Maher has enough time to clear the league's COVID-19 protocols and kick for the Buccaneers in Sunday's game against the Falcons. He last played for the Cowboys in 2019, when he made 20 of 30 field-goal attempts (67 percent) and all 36 extra-point tries.
Maher was waived from the Texans' practice squad Monday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports. Maher has been with Houston's practice squad since mid-October, but his run in the organization came without a regular-season appearance. Ka'imi Fairbairn has been able to avoid missing any time thus far in 2020, keeping Maher from the field. The Nebraska product struggled during his second season with the Cowboys in 2019, converting just 20 of 30 field-goal tries.
The Texans signed Maher to the practice squad Monday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports. Houston's starting kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn has been perfect over the last three weeks, drilling nine field goals and nine extra points without a miss. Maher will add depth in case things get derailed. Last season with the Cowboys, Maher connected on 20 of 30 field goals and hit all 36 extra-point attempts.
