The Jets waived Hammond on Saturday, Ralph Vacchiano of SNY reports. Hammond was competing among a plethora of wide receivers for a role on the Jets' roster, but ultimately fell short of making it through final cuts. Although he failed to make enough of an impression to make the roster, the 27-year-old could be a decent practice squad candidate should he clear waivers.
Hammond has signed a reserve/future contract with the Jets. Hammond spent this past season on the Chiefs practice squad. Since entering the league as an undrafted rookie in 2014, Hammond has featured in 25 games, primarily making his impact felt as a punt returner. However, in order to make the Jets roster ahead of next season, he may need to show more ability as a pass-catcher. To this point, Hammond boasts just four career receptions.
Hammond was cut by the Chiefs on Saturday but was signed to the team's practice squad Sunday, the Kansas City Star reports. Hammond was considered a longshot to earn a roster spot, so it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that he didn't make it. However, he could still earn a promotion to suit up on Sundays should other wide receivers suffer an injury.
Hammond reeled in five passes for 51 yards in the preseason finale against the Packers on Thursday. A longshot to make Kansas City's 53-man roster, Hammond at least showcased his ability to other potential suitors. He's also contributed on special teams, making him an potentially attractive options for other clubs, but his run with the Chiefs will likely come to an end Saturday when the roster is trimmed.
Hammond grabbed each of the three passes thrown his way in Saturday's preseason contest against the Bears. His best effort of the preseason couldn't have come at a better time but it still may not be enough to earn him a spot on the 53-man roster. Hammond is no longer being utilized on special teams and has been passed by multiple receivers on the depth chart. Unless something drastically changes in the near future, he's likely headed for the free agent market.
