Player Outlook
2021 was a difficult season for Sermon. He was beat out by Elijah Mitchell and then struggled to stay healthy. But the nice thing about being in Kyle Shanahan's system is that one good offseason could change all of that. Sermon has immense upside if he could wrestle the job away from Mitchell or take over after an injury. But he also has competition from Jeff Wilson and Tyrion Davis-Price to even be the primary backup. Sermon is a late-round pick at best in redraft leagues, but a solid stash in Dynasty.
Player News

Sermon is inactive for Sunday's playoff game against the Cowboys. Though Sermon was recently activated from injured reserve, he's the odd man out Sunday, with Elijah Mitchell, JaMycal Hasty and Jeff Wilson available to handle the 49ers' backfield duties in the team's playoff opener.
-
Sermon (ankle) was activated from injured reserve Tuesday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. The 49ers needed to make this move by Tuesday, or else Sermon's 21-day practice window would have closed, and he would have remained on IR for the rest of the team's playoff run. Assuming all of Elijah Mitchell (knee), JaMycal Hasty and Jeff Wilson are available for Sunday's wild-card game at Dallas, there's a good chance Sermon is a healthy scratch. That's also assuming the rookie heads into the weekend without an injury designation.
-
Sermon (ankle) wasn't among the players added to San Francisco's roster Saturday ahead of Sunday's regular-season finale against the Rams, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports. San Francisco designated Sermon for return from injured reserve Dec. 22, a transaction that gives the team 21 days to evaluate him for a return to the 53-man roster. The team will thus have until Wednesday of the upcoming week to either activate Sermon or keep him on IR for the entirety of a potential postseason run, pending the results of the Week 18 games. The rookie running back will finish the regular season with 41 carries for 167 yards and a touchdown to go with three catches for 26 yards over nine appearances.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that the 49ers expect to activate Sermon (ankle) from injured reserve before Sunday's game against the Texans, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. Absent for the past four contests due to a sprained right ankle, Sermon set himself up for a return in the near future by getting back on the practice field last Wednesday. Assuming Shanahan's statement comes to pass, Sermon may find it difficult to be a part of the offense if Elijah Mitchell (knee) also puts an end to a three-game absence this weekend. If Mitchell is available, he could take on his usual workhorse role, while his stand-in, Jeff Wilson, would be next up for early-down reps. JaMycal Hasty also is on hand for change-of-pace work, which could limit Sermon's chances to get on the field.

The 49ers didn't activate Sermon (ankle) from injured reserve before Thursday's game at Tennessee, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Sermon was designated to return from IR on Wednesday, so it's no surprise he was unable to prove he wasn't past his sprained right ankle. With Elijah Mitchell (knee) absent for a third consecutive game, Jeff Wilson will act as the 49ers' primary running back Thursday, while the likes of JaMycal Hasty, Brian Hill, wide receiver Deebo Samuel and fullback Kyle Juszczyk mix into the backfield as well.
