  • 49ers' Trey Sermon: Inefficient in preseason win

Sermon rushed six times for 11 yards and brought in his only target for five yards in the 49ers' 28-21 preseason win over the Packers on Friday night.

The 2021 third-round pick is coming off an underwhelming rookie season, and he didn't exactly get his second campaign off to a rousing start Friday. Sermon's 1.8 yards per carry was the lowest figure of any 49ers running back for the night, and he saw backfield mates JaMycal Hasty and Jordan Mason turn in far more efficient efforts. Sermon will aim to give a better accounting of himself in his bid for a roster spot when San Francisco takes on the Vikings in a road exhibition clash a week from Saturday night.

  • 49ers' Trey Sermon: May be featured Friday

Sermon was busy at Wednesday's practice and could see extensive work in Friday's preseason opener versus the Packers, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.

Sermon took the spotlight Wednesday with Elijah Mitchell not practicing for yet-to-be-disclosed reasons. Candidates for backup work behind Mitchell include Sermon, Jeff Wilson and Tyrion Davis-Price, with the competition seemingly open as the Niners prepare for the start of the preseason.

  • 49ers' Trey Sermon: Shows up in good shape

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Sermon "is as yolked up as he can be" for the start of training camp, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.

Shanahan believes the 2021 third-round pick learned some lessons from a disappointing rookie season. Sermon mostly remained buried on the depth chart while fellow rookie Elijah Mitchell emerged as the starting running back, but there's an opportunity for Sermon to earn backup work this summer with the competition mainly consisting of veteran Jeff Wilson and rookie third-round pick Tyrion Davis-Price. Sermon seems to be off to a good start, at least when it comes to strength and conditioning. The practice field will be his real challenge, along with preseason games in the coming weeks.

  • 49ers' Trey Sermon: Lot to prove in camp

Sermon heads into training camp healthy and projected to sit third on the 49ers' running back depth chart, Kyle Madson of USA Today reports.

Sermon's rookie season was one to forget, as the 2021 third-round pick failed to impress during his first go-around on the grand stage. Elijah Mitchell -- who was drafted three rounds after Sermon -- seized the opportunity to become head coach Kyle Shanahan's primary rushing option last year. While draft status doesn't always equate to instant success, the running back position generally is one that hasn't required lots of development time for rookies in the modern NFL, so Sermon will have a lot to prove in camp. From a fantasy perspective, the second-year back will not be a name going off the boards in standard formats, as he projects to start on special teams, assuming he can maintain that current projected status.
