Colts' Trey Sermon: Five carries in backup role
Sermon had five carries for 17 yards and one reception on two targets in Sunday's overtime win at Baltimore.
Sermon was the surprise backup to starter Zack Moss, as Deon Jackson was waived Saturday and Jake Funk was limited to just five snaps on special teams. Sermon played 18 snaps on offense. It looks like Sermon again will serve as the backup Week 4 against the Rams and then would move back to a smaller role if Jonathan Taylor (ankle) comes of the reserve/PUP list for Week 5.

Colts' Trey Sermon: Gets promoted
Sermon was signed off Indianapolis' practice squad to the active roster ahead of Sunday's game at Baltimore, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
The Colts waived Deon Jackson in a corresponding move. Sermon will likely serve as the No. 3 running back on the depth chart behind starter Zack Moss and backup Jake Funk. Sermon may not play any snaps on offense and will likely be used as insurance instead. Sermon may also not be on the active roster long if Jonathan Taylor (ankle) returns from the reserve/PUP list Week 5.

Sermon was waived from IR by the Eagles after suffering a knee injury during training camp, but this move signals the Ohio State product is now fully recovered. Sermon landed on the Eagles' IR at final cuts ahead of Week 1, but he'll now get a chance to find work elsewhere once he's healthy. The 2021 third-round pick of the 49ers has 43 career carries for 186 yards (4.3 YPC) and one touchdown across 11 games.

Sermon is reportedly dealing with an injury sustained in Philadelphia's preseason finale, when he translated 16 carries into 30 yards and one touchdown. Sermon took 16 carries for 30 yards and a touchdown in Thursday's 27-13 preseason loss to Indianapolis, with Zach Berman of The Athletic noting that Sermon is fifth on the depth chart.
Sermon also had four catches for 26 yards on six targets in what may have been an audition for other teams. The Eagles didn't play any starters in this one and also held out key backups, with the absentee list including four RBs (D'Andre Swift, Rashaad Penny, Kenneth Gainwell, Boston Scott). Sermon didn't exactly knock it out of the park, but much of that isn't his fault given that the Colts played a lot of starters and the Eagles used none. If nothing else, Sermon is one of the running backs most likely to get claimed next week after teams make roster cuts.
