Smith was called up from AHL Chicago on Friday, Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes' official site reports.
Smith and Josh Leivo were called up under emergency conditions as the Hurricanes attempt to play through their COVID-19 outbreak. The 27-year-old Smith has 10 goals and 18 assists in 24 games with the Wolves this season, though he'll likely be limited to a bottom-six role during this stint with the big club.
