How a former Cowboys player helped stop John Daly from committing suicide
Thomas 'Hollywood' Henderson helped save Daly's life in 1997
The John Daly 30 for 30 documentary "Hit It Hard" debuted Tuesday, and it was obviously terrific. There were plenty of funny moments, great quotes and hilarious Daly stories. But there was also one extremely sobering part in which former Dallas Cowboys player Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson, a friend of Daly's, recounted a time in 1997 he thought Daly was going to commit suicide.
"I'm in my bed and my phone rings," said Henderson. "It's John Daly, and I hear the gunning of an engine. He said, 'I'm on a mountaintop.' I said, 'John, what are you talking about?' He said, 'There will be no more John Daly tomorrow.' I started to cry.
"I said, 'You can't do this ... the world ain't done with John Daly.' I said, 'John, I've never asked you to do anything, but will you do me a favor?' He said, 'What is it?' I said, 'Go home ... go home.' So he went home."
In a conversation with the New York Post, Daly admits he was "two feet away from doing it. I had been struggling to see my [first] kid, Shynah; that was the whole focus. And the PGA Tour was making me go to rehab, so I was being forced to do something I don't want to do. I wasn't used to the success. I wasn't ready for it. It was tough time in my life.''
That's a really intense story, and one I'm glad had a happy ending. You should definitely try and catch a re-airing of this documentary, or if it's queued up on your DVR, you should watch it right away.
