Addison Russell, young shortstops and the fun MLB stat of the day
Nine times this season a shortstop age 23 or younger has had a 2-HR game
During a 9-5 Cubs loss, shortstop Addison Russell hit two home runs.
A player hitting two home runs in a losing effort would otherwise be a footnote, but it made for a very cool stat:
Addison Russell has the 9th multi-HR game this year by a SS age 23 or under. The previous record for a season was 5.

All the young shortstop talent!
Trevor Story had two homers on both April 4 and April 8 and he's 23. Carlos Correa hit a pair on April 6 and he's 21. Manny Machado was playing shortstop on May 8 and he's 23. Corey Seager has two two-homer games and one three-homer game and he's 22. Francisco Lindor is also 22 and he hit a pair of homers on June 25.
Machado is back to third base, but he's worthy of a side mention just because he's still only 23 and he's been one of the best players in baseball for a while.
Overall, though, this is a fun stat to illustrate the outstanding young talent at shortstop in Major League Baseball right now.
Having a shortstop age-23 or younger hit at least two homers in a game only happened five times in a season twice. In two other seasons, it happened exactly four times and in just six other years did it happen three times.
Some of those times, it was simply the same guy doing it. Like in 1999, Alex Rodriguez was 23 and had four two-homer games while Edgar Renteria did it once. The other season with five occurrences was 1943, and it was Vern Stephens all five times.
So 2016 is overall a very remarkable season for young shortstops with power.
