Major League Baseball completed its 2020 amateur draft on Thursday night. The spread of the novel coronavirus required the draft to be held virtually instead of in Omaha, Nebraska alongside the College World Series. The owners' desire to slash costs, meanwhile, led to the draft being shortened from 40 rounds to five.

With the 17th overall pick, the Boston Red Sox selected Nick Yorke, a second baseman out of Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, California. It was a surprise pick and part of the reason why the Red Sox earned a C grade from our experts.

The Red Sox surrendered their second-round pick as punishment for the sign-stealing scandal and that gave them a small bonus pool. Selecting high school infielder Nick Yorke was the surprise of the first round, though Boston did balance it with slugger Blaze Jordan in the third round. Jordan has big power and was viewed as possible early second round pick at times this spring. The Red Sox were always going to be behind the 8-ball because the were missing a pick. All things considered, they did fine.

Below you'll find a draft tracker for the Red Sox.
