Bryce Harper on the Mets: 'I hope they win it all and good luck to them'
The Mets clinched the NL East on Saturday. What did Nationals slugger Bryce Harper have to say about that? "I hope they win it all and good luck to them."
Saturday afternoon the Mets clinched their first NL East title since 2006 with a win over the Reds (NYM 10, CIN 2). They're going back to the postseason for the first time since that 2006 season.
By clinching the division, the Mets also officially eliminated the Nationals from postseason contention. Washington was considered the best team in baseball coming into the season, but they failed to live up to expectations for a number of reasons.
One Nationals player who most certainly held up his end of the bargain this year is Bryce Harper, who is hitting .339/.470/.663 with 41 home runs. Harper won Saturday's game over the Phillies (WAS 2, PHI 1) with a 12th inning walk-off double. It was too little, too late though. The Mets had already won.
Following Saturday's game, Harper was asked about the Mets winning the division. His response:
Bryce Harper on #Mets: "Because they’re from the East and you want that out of your division, I hope they win it all and good luck to them."

Hey, that's a pretty classy answer. Harper could have easily played the "I'm not thinking about them, I'm worried about us" card and everyone would have been okay with it. He went out of his way to wish them luck.
While the Mets are trying to win the third World Series in franchise history, Harper and the rest of the Nationals will be picking up the pieces following their disappointing season in the coming weeks. GM Mike Rizzo and his staff have a lot of work ahead of them.
