Alright, Padres fans, someone get a lawyer. Evidently Colbert Michael Hamels was signed to a "lifetime contract" to the San Diego Padres by his mother upon birth.

Evidently Colbert Michael Hamels was signed to a "lifetime contract" to the San Diego Padres by his mother upon birth. And this wasn't just some Mom having fun with her child. No, Mrs. Hamels worked for the Padres and was friends with then-GM Andy Strasberg and they got an actual Padres' contract. He was signed for a solitary dollar.

Obviously all of the above text was tongue-in-cheek, because it isn't legitimate. But that doesn't mean it's not funny.
Hamels is now an ace-caliber pitcher who will most certainly sign a new contract worth over $100 million, whether that's an extension with the Phillies or with someone else in free agency following this season. So, yeah -- understatement alert! -- that $1 would be quite the bargain.
Again, someone in San Diego get a lawyer on this.
