The Mets reportedly had acquired exciting outfielder Carlos Gomez -- who was with the Mets organization once upon a time, prior to the Johan Santana trade -- Wednesday night, in a move that would have sent infielder Wilmer Flores and Zack Wheeler to the Brewers.

Generally speaking, when these types of things happen, the player(s) involved in any deal are pulled from the game. Think about Troy Tulowitzki being double-switched out earlier this week, to name a very recent example.

The practice has actually led to what is now called #HugWatch on Twitter, as often times the traded players go through the dugout hugging their now-former teammates goodbye.

Flores' #HugWatch actually got pretty weird on Wednesday. He remained in the game and fought through tears in doing so.

Before the callous among us surface, let's keep in mind Flores was signed by the Mets at age 16 from out of Venezuela in 2007. There have got to be an awful lot of emotions flying at the same time -- without even mentioning he was in the middle of a pennant race and now all of a sudden is not -- to fight through while concentrating on playing.

Good for the Mets fans who remained at the game late to give Flores a standing ovation that he can mentally take with him.

A funny thing happened later, though, as the trade is not going to happen, per Mets GM Sandy Alderson.

After the game, Mets manager Terry Collins said Flores didn't know.

Well, yes, there is a lot of BS out there, but c'mon, Flores knew he was to be traded, otherwise it's the mother of all coincidences that Flores just happened to be crying on this particular night.

So what happened? Well, trades generally fall through when medicals are exchanged and a team doesn't like something it sees. Mets starting pitcher Wheeler is recovering from Tommy John surgery. Perhaps there's something from that end?

We don't know. What we do know is that if the Mets would really have us believe there was nothing to the reports from every reputable outlet -- both Internet and print -- than Flores was crying for some other reason.
