Red Sox manager John Farrell has stepped down for the remainder of the season due to his diagnosis of lymphoma. Baseball takes a backseat to real life and the most important thing here is Farrell beating this, so consider this look at his temporary replacement under the proper perspective.

Torey Lovullo will take over as the Red Sox acting manager for the rest of the 2015 season.

So who is Lovullo?

The 50-year-old spent parts of eight seasons in the majors as a utility infielder. He was with the Tigers, Yankees, Angels, Mariners, Athletics, Indians and Phillies for stints in the bigs, posting a career line of .224/.301/.335, though that hardly matters because it's not like talent equates smarts.

Lovullo started coaching with the Indians in 2001 as a minor-league infield instructor. He worked his way through the minors, managing the Indians' Triple-A affiliate from 2006-09. He jumped over to the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox in 2010. When Farrell was hired to manage the Blue Jays in 2011, he took Lovullo with him to coach first. When Farrell went back to Boston in 2013, Lovullo came back as his bench coach, a position he's since held.

Lovullo has been in the running for several managerial openings in the recent past and was reported as the runner-up in openings with the Rangers and Twins this past offseason.

Under these terrible circumstances, Lovullo will get a chance to show what he can do as the top dog in the dugout. The Red Sox are 50-64, 13 games back in the AL East.
