At this point it almost seems like we're piling on any time we point out an umpire misses a call -- but it is important to note that it happens and hopefully we can find a way to make sure it happens less.

With that said, Sam Holbrook helped give the Blue Jays their first run of the game on Friday, calling Toronto's Colby Rasmus safe at home despite never touching the plate. Behold:

Colby Rasmus

The entire play can be seen here.

It was the first of two runs the Blue Jays scored in first inning off of Boston starter Josh Beckett. The other was scored with just one out, so the call didn't necessarily lead to the second run.

From where Holbrook is standing, you can understand how he thought Rasmus got his left hand on the plate -- and it's close enough that it'd be difficult for the third base umpire, Joe West, to be able to see it well enough to overrule Holbrook. In the days before HDTV this is a call that we'd think was just too close to call and Red Sox fans would be convinced he was out and Blue Jays fans would say he's safe. Now, though, we have the technology to make a better call -- not to replace the likes of Holbrook, but to help him do his job better.
