Only 14 players in major-league history have ever hit four home runs in one game. Only two players in big-league history have ever driven home 12 runs in one game. One man is on both of those lists: Mark Whiten.

It was exactly 20 years ago Saturday -- Sept. 7, 1993 -- when Whiten did his damage for the Cardinals in the second game of a doubleheader against the Reds in Cincinnati.

He hit a grand slam in the first inning.

In the sixth, Whiten hit a three-run homer.

Next inning, Whiten came to bat with two on again. And again he homered.

Then, in the top of the ninth with everyone in the ballpark knowing what was at stake, Whiten took Rob Dibble deep for his fourth bomb.

Both the four homers and 12 RBI tied MLB records and remain tied atop the record boards for single-game accomplishments in baseball history.
