MLB trades: Mets acquire starter Chris Bassitt from A's, per report
The Mets' active offseason continues, as does the sell-off in Oakland
The New York Mets have acquired right-handed starter Chris Bassitt from the Oakland A's, ESPN's Jeff Passan reports. Joel Sherman of the New York Post confirms the deal and adds that the A's will be receiving a pair of right-handed pitching prospects – J.T. Ginn and Adam Oller – in return.
Bassitt, 33, is coming off a 2021 season in which he pitched to 12-4 record with a 3.15 ERA/130 ERA+ with a 4.08 K/BB ratio in 157 ⅓ innings for Oakland. For his efforts, he made the All-Star team and finished 10th in the AL Cy Young balloting. For his career, Bassitt owns an ERA+ of 119 across parts of seven major-league seasons. Of his 106 career games pitched, 96 have been starts. Bassitt is arbitration-eligible going into the 2022 campaign, and he's slated for free agency this coming offseason.
Bassitt is primed to join a Mets rotation that includes Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer, Taijuan Walker and Carlos Carrasco. Health concerns abound within that front four, so Bassitt's presence will be a welcome and potentially critical one.
On the A's side of things, Ginn, 22, is a former first-rounder out of Mississippi State who pitched impressively as a starter and reached High-A in his first professional season. Oller, 27, was originally a 20th-round choice by the Pirates in 2016. He's spent five seasons in the minors and worked both as a starter and a reliever.
The Bassitt deal is the latest in what's expected to be a broader sell-off by the A's. Before the payroll-shedding concludes, star corner infielders Matt Chapman and Matt Olson are expected to be traded out of Oakland. As such, an extended period of irrelevance in the standings looms.
At the opposite end of that, the Mets continue an active offseason under owner Steve Cohen that's seen them add the likes of Scherzer, Starling Marte, Mark Canha and Eduardo Escobar.
