Outfielder Jake Marisnick turns unassisted double play at first base
Do-it-yourself double play an embarrassing moment for Albert Pujols and the Angels.
Jake Marisnick of the Houston Astros took it upon himself to turn an unassisted double play Thursday night, an unusual occurrence for sure because he plays center field. With one out in the bottom of the fourth inning and Albert Pujols running on the pitch, Matt Joyce hit a fly ball to shallow center. In the bottom of the video below, you can see Pujols pick up the flight of the ball as Marisnick runs in to catch it. But he doesn't pump the breaks and head back to first, because Pujols probably thinks there are two outs.
But there's only one out.
Marisnick never breaks stride as he catches the ball and he continues running, changing course toward first base, after he notices that Pujols isn't turning around. Rather than flipping the ball to Chris Carter at first base, Marisnick runs in and tags the bag himself. Eight unassisted double play. Inning over. Why make a throw if you don't have to? Besides, doing it this way is more noteworthy. When's the last time anyone turned an 8-u double play?
Yes, this is an 8-unassisted double play … at FIRST BASE. http://t.co/E9srMatVZZ pic.twitter.com/kRMdhNNblD

Even a megamillionaire can forget how many outs there are. The Angels had a couple of unfortunate baserunning moments in a 3-2 loss to the Astros, and Houston was on its toes defensively. Watch Jose Altuve help turn another double play (this time with teamwork):
Head's up play like this is one of the reasons the Astros are a surprising 19-10.
