The Pirates have acquired first baseman Gaby Sanchez in exchange for outfielder Gorkys Hernandez. CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman has confirmed the original reporting by Ken Rosenthal.
While the 28-year-old Sanchez, an outstanding defender, has been productive in previous seasons, this year he had a bottom-feeding slash line of .202/.250/.306 before being optioned to Triple-A New Orleans early this month. Since being demoted, he's hit .302/.431/.491 in the PCL.
The 24-year-old Hernandez, meanwhile, is hitting .257/.353/.346 for Triple-A Indianapolis. He's struggled badly at the highest level this season, but he's done so across a span of just 26 plate appearances.
The Marlins will also receive a competitive-balance draft pick from the Pirates, and CBSSports.com Insider Jon Heyman reports that right-hander Kyle Kaminska (age 23; 5.11 ERA, 49.1 IP for Double-A Jacksonville) is also headed to the Marlins.
