VIDEO: Bruce Bochy first manager ever to bring son on in relief
The Giants lost 17-0 (not a typo) Saturday night to the Dodgers, but there was one cool little nugget from that game: Bruce Bochy brought Brett Bochy in as a reliever.
The Los Angeles Dodgers absolutely throttled the San Francisco Giants Saturday, 17-0, in a score that conveniently lends itself to those mock football jokes ("The 49ers are losing to the Raiders -- they moved back to L.A.!!!! -- right?"). The Dodgers outhit the Giants 24-5 and moved their NL West lead back to two games with Clayton Kershaw set to take the hill Sunday in AT&T Park.
So the news was pretty much all terrible for the Giants. There was, however, one little nugget of positivity. Manager Bruce Bochy brought in his son, Brett Bochy, for 1 1/3 relief innings. It was the first time in MLB history that a manager brought in his son as a reliever -- and, thus, handed him the ball on the mound like this:
That's a nice father-son moment, and it did seem like -- despite the circumstances -- that Bochy fought off a proud-papa smile (16-17 second mark or so) there for a quick second.
The updated list of sons who played for their fathers in MLB:
Earle Mack (Connie)
Dale Berra (Yogi)
Billy Ripken (Cal Sr.)
Cal Ripken Jr. (Cal Sr.)
Brian McRae (Hal)
Moises Alou (Felipe)
Aaron Boone (Bob)
Brett Bochy (Bruce)
That's a short list. Congrats to the Bochy family.
