When you try to define the Rockies, the word "innovators" probably doesn't spring to mind. Over the last several seasons, however, they have had their moments of inspiration.

The Rockies, after all, were the first to experiment with shorter starts -- albeit through a four-man rotation -- and have become one of the game's most aggressive shifting teams. On Wednesday, the Rockies again flexed their creativity -- this time by employing two first basemen on a single play:

Alas, none of the Rockies' tricks seem to work. The four-man rotation probably hurt more than it helped; the defensive shifts haven't improved their defensive numbers; and the old "two fellers stationed at the cold corner" gag resulted in laughs, but no outs.

Obviously this here wasn't intentional -- they ran the wheel without the part where the first baseman charges in -- but let this be a lesson to all: fortune doesn't always favor the bold.
