You have to feel for the Brewers. On Sunday, they lost a four-hour slugfest to the Cardinals, after which they hopped a flight to D.C. Playing the second-best team in the National League is bad enough when it's a night game against the back-end starters, but the Brewers knew they had an 11 a.m. ET start against Max Scherzer. Brutal, right?

Unfortunately, life got a little worse for the Brewers during the first inning of Monday's matinee. Ryan Braun came up with two outs and nobody on and rapped a single into center field. Normally, that would be cause for celebration. Alas, out popped Dusty Baker, who (correctly) asserted the Brewers had batted out of order. The umpires conferred and, sure enough, Braun was called out.

Here's the video:

As embarrassing as the mistake is, it was an easy one to make. Braun had batted ahead of Jonathan Lucroy in every single game the two had started together in this season. For whatever reason, Craig Counsell picked the early start to flip the two, and this is what happens. Woof.

It just goes to show, you should never assume.
