World Series Game 5 score, live updates: Brewers go for first title (again); Rays try to stay alive (again)

With the World Series title on the line again, the Milwaukee Brewers will once again try to take down the Tampa Bay Rays and secure the franchise's first championship.

The Brewers failed to complete the sweep on Tuesday and were walked off in extra innings in a Game 4 loss. In Game 5, they send ace Jacob Misiorowski to the mound to try to shut things down.

The Rays, meanwhile, counter with Drew Rasmussen on short rest. Rasmussen was 16-5 with a 2.67 ERA in the regular season and had been great on the American League side of the bracket. In his Game 2 start in the World Series, however, he allowed three earned runs on six hits in 3 ⅔ innings. Further, Rasmussen's career numbers on short rest are brutal. Small sample caveats apply, and the World Series is a different animal entirely, but in four short-rest starts in his career, he's allowed five earned runs on nine hits in seven innings. He hasn't started on short rest since 2024.

As a reminder, no team in World Series history has ever blown a 3-0 lead. If we expanded the search to the entire postseason, only the 2004 Red Sox came back from a 3-0 hole to topple the Yankees. That's the lone example. The most recent 3-0 World Series lead came in 2024, when the Dodgers went up big on the Yankees, lost Game 4, but then clinched the series with a Game 5 win. The Brewers are looking to replicate that feat.

That'll do it for Miz

Jacob Misiorowski is coming out after 5 ⅔ scoreless innings accompanied by trainers. It appeared to be a problem with his leg, possibly a cramp, so the hope is that it's nothing serious.

Brewers up 4-0

Cooper Pratt is making a push for World Series MVP. He just hit a sac fly to make it 4-0 Brewers. Remember, he had four hits last night and the game-winning hit in Game 2. He's 2 for 2 with two RBI in this one.

Brewers take 3-0 lead

Christian Yelich was hit with a pitch and William Contreras just delivered an RBI double down the left field line.

And Brice Turang followed with a blooper that fell in down the left field line. It's 3-0 Brewers and they have runners at the corners with nobody out. It feels like this could be the clinching inning, given how well the Brewers' pitching is now set up.

Through five innings, Brewers up 2-0

Jacob Misiorowski has thrown five scoreless innings with only two hits and a walk allowed. He's struck out two and has thrown 74 pitches. I wouldn't be surprised if he's done or if he stays for another inning. The Brewers bullpen has a few guys stretching but no one getting hot yet.

Brewers up 2-0, Rays changing pitchers

David Hamilton singled through the drawn-in Rays infield to give the Brewers a 2-0 lead.

After striking out Jackson Chourio for the second out, Kevin Kelly is done. The Rays want lefty Garrett Cleavinger to face lefty Jake Bauers with two runners on and two out.

Brewers in business

Casey Pratt gets yet another hit (that's six in the past two games after getting the game-winning hit in Game 2) and then Garrett Mitchell singles to left-center. Runners are on first and third with one out for David Hamilton, who hit a home run in Game 4. The Brewers fans here are raucous.

Through four innings, 1-0 Brewers

Drew Rasmussen is done and Kevin Kelly is in for the Rays. Jacob Misiorowski has gotten in a little trouble, but has thrown 62 pitches through four strong innings.

Rasmussen is done

He gave the Rays four innings of one run ball on 48 pitches. That's a great outcome on short rest. Given the state of the bullpen, four innings is a godsend. Kevin Kelly is in now. It's 1-0 Brewers going to the top of the fifth.

This was touted as a series between two teams that play clean and fundamentally sound baseball, and the games on the field have been anything but that.

1-0 Brewers, mid-4th

Rasmussen is now through four innings on 48 pitches and overall has done nice work given that he's on short rest. He just gave up two warning-track flies, though, and Brice Turang's shot to center had Jonny DeLuca parked against the wall for the catch. Per Baseball Savant, it would've been a home run in 19 of the 30 MLB ballparks.

40 pitches through three innings for Miz

Brewers ace Jacob Misiorowski is giving them an ace effort so far in terms of the score. In a funny twist compared to the monster that he was early this season, he has zero strikeouts and is pitching to contact.

I know we've talked about it a lot in terms of the pitching, but both of these teams really just look exhausted. Mentally, physically, maybe spiritually.
