  • Pirates' John Jaso: Likely bound for retirement

    Jaso, who will become a free agent this offseason, said Sunday that he'll likely retire from professional baseball, Elizabeth Bloom of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. "Honestly, this is probably it for me, as far as baseball goes," Jaso said. "I don't know, I've played this game for a while, it's done a lot of great things for me, and I got to meet a lot of really cool people along the way. But I don't know, my mind is going elsewhere and everything like that. We'll see. I mean I can't say anything for sure. I can't really tell you what the future holds or whatever. But if I left now, it would be a really good feeling to leave right now, if I did. These last couple of years with the Pirates were good." The 34-year-old indicated that rather than pursue a new contract this winter, he plans to travel to Puerto Rico and pitch in on the relief efforts for the island in the wake of Hurricane Maria. If this is it for Jaso, he'll wrap up a nine-year career that included stops in Tampa Bay, Seattle, Oakland and Pittsburgh, during which he slashed .258/.356/.407 across 808 games.

It wasn't surprising to see the left-handed slugger do his damage against a righty, as 52 of his 54 career home runs have come when facing right-handed pitching. Expect Jaso to keep earning starts in right field against righties.

Obviously, Jaso is best left to deep settings because he's only playing sparingly, but he's certainly trending in the right direction.

He's sporting a .128/.244/.231 slash line and is currently seeing more at-bats than he should because of Pittsburgh's injury woes and outfielder Starling Marte's suspension. From 2012 to 2016, Jaso posted a solid .368 on-base percentage with a .377 mark and .363 wOBA against right-handed hurlers. There's probably positive regression ahead, but Jaso is more of an NL-only option than a go-to starter in most mixed leagues. Still, don't overlook him as a potential low-price flier in daily contests when Pittsburgh faces a right-handed pitcher.

Back in the leadoff spot for the first time since Aug. 2, and returning to the lineup for his first start since Saturday, Jaso wasted little time before making an impact. Jaso finished an eight-pitch at-bat by crushing a home run to center field off Jared Eickhoff to start Thursday's game. The solo shot came off Jaso's bat at 103 mph, according to Statcast, and traveled a projected 412 feet. It was his sixth homer of the season and the seventh of his career to lead off a game. After hitting .314 in 35 at-bats last month, the first baseman is off to a sluggish start in September. He's just 5-for-21 (.238) with a .304 OBP, both of which are the second-worst marks for any month this season for Jaso.
