  • Cubs' Yan Gomes: On bench Sunday

Gomes is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates. Gomes is hitless with six strikeouts in his past 16 at-bats and will take a seat Sunday for the second time in the past three games. P.J. Higgins will start behind the plate and bat seventh in the series finale at Pittsburgh.

  • Cubs' Yan Gomes: Sitting Friday

Gomes is not in the starting lineup for Friday's contest versus the Pirates. Gomes will get a day off after he went 3-for-16 with a homer and three RBI while starting the last four games. P.J. Higgins will draw the start at catcher and bat seventh against Pittsburgh.

  • Cubs' Yan Gomes: Powers offense in loss

Gomes went 3-for-4 with a home run and three total RBI in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Rockies. Gomes accounted for half of the Cubs' six hits. Two of those gave them their only scoring plays in the game -- a two-run single in the third inning and a solo shot in the sixth, both off Rockies starter Ryan Feltner. Gomes continues to see most of the starts at catcher with Willson Contreras (ankle) out, with P.J. Higgins holding down a backup role. This was Gomes' third multi-hit effort in September, a month in which he's hit .378 (14-for-37) with two long balls and eight RBI. He's up to a .242/.270/.375 slash line with eight homers, 28 RBI, 22 runs scored and two stolen bases through 78 contests overall.

  • Cubs' Yan Gomes: On bench Saturday

Gomes isn't starting Saturday against Colorado. Gomes is getting a day off after he went 2-for-11 with a double, three RBI, a run and a stolen base over the last three games. P.J. Higgins will start behind the plate and bat fifth.

  • Cubs' Yan Gomes: Riding pine Monday

Gomes isn't in the lineup Monday against the Mets. Gomes went 0-for-3 during Sunday's loss to the Giants and will head to the bench for the third time in the last five games. P.J. Higgins is starting at catcher and batting seventh.

  • Cubs' Yan Gomes: Retreats to bench

Gomes isn't starting Saturday against the Giants. Gomes went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run, a walk and a strikeout during Friday's win over San Francisco, but he'll be out of the lineup for the second time in the last three games. P.J. Higgins is starting at catcher and batting sixth.

  • Cubs' Yan Gomes: Absent from Thursday's lineup

Gomes isn't starting Thursday against Cincinnati. Gomes went 4-for-4 during Wednesday's loss to the Reds, but he'll take a seat for Thursday's series finale. P.J. Higgins is starting behind the plate and batting sixth.

  • Cubs' Yan Gomes: Collects four hits Wednesday

Gomes went 4-for-4 in Wednesday's 7-1 loss to the Reds. All four of the hits were singles, and Gomes was unable to drive anyone in or come around to score. The veteran started Wednesday with Willson Contreras (ankle) landing on the injured list Tuesday. Gomes should continue to start while Contreras is out with P.J. Higgins able to serve in a reserve role, though Higgins started at first base Wednesday.

  • Cubs' Yan Gomes: Steps in as No. 1 backstop

Gomes will start at catcher and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Reds. With Willson Contreras (ankle) landing on the injured list Tuesday, Gomes looks poised to serve as Chicago's No. 1 backstop for at least the next week. Gomes will pick up his fifth start in six games Wednesday after going 4-for-16 with a double, a stolen base and a run over the previous four contests.

  • Cubs' Yan Gomes: Resting Sunday

Gomes is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals. Though Willson Contreras (ankle) isn't yet ready to rejoin the lineup, Gomes will take a seat for the day game after a night game after he was behind the plate for each of the previous three contests. No. 3 backstop P.J. Higgins will step in at catcher for the series finale.

  • Cubs' Yan Gomes: Nabs rare steal

Gomes went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Friday's 8-0 loss to the Cardinals. Gomes isn't known for speed -- this was just the sixth steal of his major-league career, which spans 11 seasons. It was his first theft since 2020. Even if he wanted to run more, he hasn't afforded himself many opportunities. His .247 on-base percentage is his lowest since 2016, and he's batting just .219 with six home runs, 20 RBI and 19 runs scored through 227 plate appearances. Gomes should continue to fill in as the Cubs' top catcher while Willson Contreras deals with a lingering ankle injury.

  • Cubs' Yan Gomes: Produces despite going hitless

Gomes went 0-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored in Wednesday's 7-1 win over the Cardinals. Despite failing to record a hit, Gomes contributed with four combined runs and RBI Wednesday. The backup catcher now has 37 combined runs and RBI in 64 games played this season. With Willson Contreras still playing almost every day, Gomes only holds value in deep two-catcher leagues where counting stats are most valued.

  • Cubs' Yan Gomes: Starting Sunday's contest

Gomes is starting at catcher and batting eighth in Sunday's game against the Reds. Willson Contreras gets a breather in the series finale, while Franmil Reyes will serve as the DH. The addition of Reyes has cut into Gomes' playing time, as the former is seeing most of his playing time at DH, and Gomes typically either catches or serves as the DH when he's in the lineup. At this point, the veteran simply looks like a backup to Contreras, which limits his fantasy appeal.

  • Cubs' Yan Gomes: Remains on bench for nightcap

Gomes isn't starting the second game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Cardinals. Gomes didn't take the field during the first game of Thursday's twin bill, and he'll remain on the bench for the nightcap. P.J. Higgins is starting behind the plate while Willson Contreras serves as the designated hitter.

  • Cubs' Yan Gomes: On bench for Game 1 of twin bill

Gomes is out of the lineup for the first game of Thursday's doubleheader with the Cardinals. Gomes is absent from the lineup for the front end of the twin bill, but expect him to check in behind the dish for Game 2 while top backstop Willson Contreras either heads to the bench or serves as the Cubs' designated hitter.

  • Cubs' Yan Gomes: Not starting Wednesday

Gomes is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals. Willson Contreras is behind the plate Wednesday and Rafael Ortega is getting a turn as the Cubs' designated hitter, closing off both of Gomes' avenues to starting roles. Though the Cubs' decision not to deal Contreras ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline is a negative development for Gomes' playing-time outlook, Gomes should still be in line for at least a handful of starts per week.

  • Cubs' Yan Gomes: Sitting out series finale

Gomes is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants. Gomes had caught three of the Cubs' last four games, but he'll take a seat in the series finale while Willson Contreras checks in behind the plate after having previously seen more opportunities at designated hitter coming out of the All-Star break. Contreras is a prime candidate to get moved ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline, so Gomes could soon have the No. 1 catcher's role all to himself.

  • Cubs' Yan Gomes: Not in Monday's lineup

Gomes isn't starting Monday's game against the Pirates. Gomes homered twice during Sunday's win over the Phillies, but he'll get a breather as the Cubs return home Monday. Willson Contreras is starting behind the dish while Frank Schwindel serves as the designated hitter.

  • Cubs' Yan Gomes: Homers twice in series finale

Gomes went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Phillies. Gomes put the Cubs on the board with his solo blast in the top of the third inning, and he extended the team's lead with another solo homer in the next frame. The 35-year-old didn't appear in any of the last three games since Willson Contreras has been used more as a catcher than as a designated hitter recently. However, Gomes will likely be in line for significantly more playing time if Contreras is ultimately dealt prior to the trade deadline in early August.

  • Cubs' Yan Gomes: Starting Sunday

Gomes is starting at catcher and batting seventh in Sunday's game against the Phillies. Gomes sat out the last three games but will enter the lineup with Willson Contreras getting a breather in the series finale. Gomes might get a little more fantasy value if Contreras is traded, though the former's .542 OPS doesn't inspire a ton of confidence even if he's seeing more playing time.
