  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: Not starting Thursday

Chavis is out of the lineup for Thursday's game at Arizona. Chavis started the past four games and appears to have taken over the starting job at first base with a .913 OPS in August, but he'll take a seat for Thursday's contest. Josh VanMeter will man first base in the series finale for Pittsburgh.

  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: Smashes two long balls

Chavis went 2-for-4 with two home runs, two runs and three RBI in a 6-4 loss to the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. Chavis got Pittsburgh on the board with a solo shot off opposing starter Tommy Henry in the sixth inning and added a two-run home run in the eighth to cap a three-run frame. The pair of homers were the 26-year-old's first since July 10. He's slashing .389/.389/.778 through 18 at-bats across eight contests to open the month of August.

  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: Back on bench against righty

Chavis is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins. Chavis had started in six of the Pirates' last seven games, but he largely benefited from Pittsburgh facing a lefty-heavy schedule. With right-hander Pablo Lopez on the mound for the Marlins, the righty-hitting Chavis will retreat to the bench. Yoshi Tsutsugo, Daniel Vogelbach and Kevin Newman should serve as Pittsburgh's primary starters at first base, designated hitter and second base, respectively, closing off Chavis' three main paths to a full-time role.

  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: Starts again after Sunday's homer

Chavis will start at first base and bat third in Monday's game against the Marlins. Chavis will stick in the lineup for the fifth time in six games after he went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and a double in Sunday's 8-6 win over the Brewers. Though his playing time has been trending up of late, the righty-hitting Chavis still appears poised to see most of his playing time against left-handed pitching moving forward. Yoshi Tsutsugo and Daniel Vogelbach both bat from the left side and should be the Pirates' preferred options at first base and designated hitter, respectively, when the team opposes righties.

  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: Smacks 10th homer

Chavis went 2-for-5 with a double and a solo home run Sunday against the Brewers. Chavis drew the start at first base and hit fifth with southpaw Eric Lauer on the mound. He took advantage by slugging his 10th home run of the season and second in six starts in July. Chavis is likely to be in the lineup primarily with lefties on the mound for the time being, as each of Yoshi Tsutsugo, Josh VanMeter and Kevin Newman appear to be ahead of him on the depth chart against righties.

  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: Slugs ninth homer

Chavis went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run Saturday against the Brewers. Chavis drew only his second start in his last six games while losing out on playing time to Josh VanMeter. Both of those starts have come against southpaws, so Chavis appears to be on the short side of a platoon. He took advantage of the opportunity Saturday, smacking a two-run home run off Aaron Ashby in the third inning to tally his ninth long ball of the campaign. Chavis has shown an all-or-nothing approach at the dish of late, as he has only six hits in his last 27 at-bats -- though three have left the yard.

  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: Sitting again Friday

Chavis is not in the starting lineup Friday versus the Brewers. Chavis will be on the bench again Friday as the Pirates take on right-hander Corbin Burnes. Josh VanMeter will draw the start at first base and bat fifth versus Milwaukee.

  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: Not starting Thursday

Chavis isn't in the lineup Thursday against the Brewers. Right-hander Adrian Houser is starting for Milwaukee on Thursday, and Chavis will be out of the lineup for the third time in the last four games. Josh VanMeter is starting at first base while Hoy Park takes over at the keystone.

  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: Could move into short-side platoon

Chavis is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals. Chavis will take a seat for the Pirates' second straight matchup with a right-handed pitcher, and he looks as though he may be in danger of moving into a short-side platoon role. The lefty-hitting Josh VanMeter will replace him at first base Wednesday, and the rehabbing Yoshi Tsutsugo (back) will be another candidate to poach playing time from Chavis against right-handed pitching once Tsutsugo comes off the injured list.

  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: Not starting Monday

Chavis isn't starting Monday's game against the Nationals, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Chavis is getting a day off after he went 0-for-8 with four strikeouts over the last two games. Josh VanMeter will start at first base while Hoy Park takes over at the keystone Monday.

  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: Cranks clutch hits in win

Chavis went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in Thursday's 8-7 victory against the Cubs. Chavis quietly went 0-for-3 over his first three plate appearances, but he came up big late in the game. The 26-year-old crushed a solo homer off David Robertson in the eighth inning to tie the score 7-7, and he followed with a walk-off single in the 10th. This was a nice turnaround performance for Chavis, who came into the contest hitting only .175 (11-for-63) in June.

  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: Bows out of starting nine

Chavis is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs. Yu Chang will draw the start at first base after Chavis had been included in the Pittsburgh lineup for each of the past six contests. During that stretch, Chavis managed only two hits in 19 at-bats, but thanks to drawing five walks, he produced a .292 on-base average.

  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: Draws three free passes

Chavis went 0-for-2 with three walks and two runs Monday against the Cubs. Chavis entered the game having earned only nine free passes on the season and never multiple in a game. However, Chavis took advantage of Caleb Kilian's inability to consistently find the strike zone -- he issued five total walks -- and has now reached base in eight of his last 11 games. He hasn't produced much otherwise in that span, as he has tallied only four runs scored and four RBI. Overall, Chavis has maintained a .257/.307/.423 line across 192 plate appearances on the season.

  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: Not in lineup for Game 2

Chavis is out of the lineup for Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cardinals. Chavis started the past six games and will receive a contest off after going 0-for-3 with a strikeout during the matinee. Yu Chang will start at first base in Chavis' place in the nightcap.

  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: Slugs sixth homer

Chavis went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run Monday against the Cardinals. Chavis took Zack Thompson yard in the fifth inning to record his sixth home run of the season. It was also his fourth multi-hit effort in his last 11 starts, which has helped him record a .244 average in that span despite striking out at a 31.9 percent clip. Chavis has maintained a .327 wOBA and 111 wRC+ across 169 plate appearances on the campaign, and he should be locked into the starting first base role so long as Yoshi Tsutsugo (back) is sidelined.

  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: Tallies 19th RBI

Chavis went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI on Friday against Atlanta. Chavis hit a ground-rule double in the seventh inning to tally his 19th RBI of the season. He has three extra-base hits in his last nine games, also tallying four RBI and four runs scored in that span. Chavis should remain locked into the starting first base role while hitting cleanup so long as Yoshi Tsutsugo (back) remains sidelined.

  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: Takes seat Wednesday

Chavis is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers. Chavis will get a breather for the series finale after he donned the Golden Sombrero in Tuesday's 5-3 loss. Yu Chang will draw the start at first base in place of Chavis, who went 5-for-20 with a home run, a double, two walks, four runs, three RBI and a stolen base in his last five starts before Tuesday's four-strikeout performance.

  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: Homers in return

Chavis (forearm) went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and a walk in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Dodgers. Chavis opened the scoring in the first inning with a blast off Dodgers starter Julio Urias, and the Pirates never looked back. This was Chavis' first start since last Friday as he battled a forearm injury. The 26-year-old lifted his slash line to .293/.331/.500 with the two-hit effort, and he's added five homers, 17 RBI and 13 runs scored without a stolen base in 40 contests this year. With Yoshi Tsutsugo (back) and Daniel Vogelbach (hamstring) on the injured list, Chavis has a chance to see near-everyday reps at first base in the short term.

  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: Back in action Tuesday

Chavis (forearm) is starting at first base and batting third Tuesday against the Dodgers, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Chavis sat out the past three games after exiting Friday's contest with left forearm discomfort, but he'll return to the starting nine Tuesday. The 26-year-old has a .751 OPS through 22 games in May and should continue to see plenty of playing time at first base with Yoshi Tsutsugo (back) on the injured list.

  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: Remains on bench

Chavis (forearm) isn't in the starting lineup for Monday's game against the Dodgers, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Chavis continues to deal with discomfort in his left forearm, resulting in another start for Josh VanMeter at first base. The Pirates have not disclosed whether Chavis will be available off the bench Monday evening.
