  • Cubs' Rowan Wick: Secures another save

Wick earned a save against the Reds on Thursday, striking out two batters in a perfect ninth inning. Wick worked the count full to two of the three batters he faced but came out on top with a 1-2-3 inning. The right-hander picked up his third save in the past four days and extended his scoreless streak to 11 contests. During that stretch, he's posted a 15:3 K:BB over 12.1 innings while notching three saves, one hold and two wins.

  • Cubs' Rowan Wick: Notches sixth save

Wick gave up a hit and struck out two over 1.1 scoreless innings Wednesday to record his sixth save of the season in a 4-2 win over the Nationals. The 29-year-old extended his scoreless streak to 10 appearances and 11.1 innings, and Wick has picked up two saves and a win during his three trips to the mound in August. The Cubs don't seem to have any better options to close, so he'll likely continue to see ninth-inning work despite a lackluster 4.02 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 48:21 K:BB through 47 innings on the season.

  • Cubs' Rowan Wick: Earns fifth save

Wick worked around a hit to fire a scoreless inning and earn the save in Monday's 6-3 win over the Nationals. He struck out two. With David Robertson, Scott Effross and Mychal Givens all getting moved before the trade deadline last week, Wick looks like the last man standing for saves in Chicago. The righty now has five of them for the season, which matches his career-best total from last year. Wick had closer steam heading into 2022 but ultimately saw Robertson take the lead in the team's bullpen, though the former could now be primed for increased fantasy value down the stretch due to decreased competition.

  • Cubs' Rowan Wick: Gets win, could be closer

Wick (3-5) gave up one hit and one walk with zero strikeouts over 1.1 innings Friday against the Marlins en route to the win. He got the final out of the top of the eighth inning before the Cubs took the lead in the bottom of the frame, giving Wick his third win of the campaign. With David Robertson in Philadelphia, Wick is the leading candidate to get save chances for the Cubs over the final eight weeks of the season.

  • Cubs' Rowan Wick: Tagged with second straight loss

Wick (1-5) allowed three runs on five hits while retiring just two batters to take the loss Saturday against the Dodgers. Wick was tagged with the loss for the second straight day, and Saturday's performance was particularly discouraging. It was the third time this season the righty allowed three runs in an outing. Wick is now sitting with an ugly 5.30 ERA, which would be his worst mark since his 2018 rookie season, when he posted a 6.48 ERA across 10 games with the Padres. He's not a fantasy asset at this point.

  • Cubs' Rowan Wick: Takes loss Friday

Wick (1-4) allowed an unearned run on a hit and a walk in the 10th inning of Friday's 4-3 loss to the Dodgers. He didn't retire any batters. Wick got the unenviable task of entering in the bottom of the 10th inning with the game tied and an automatic runner on second. He intentionally walked Freddie Freeman but then allowed a single to Will Smith, which brought home the speedy Trea Turner to end the contest. Wick has struggled this year with a 4.63 ERA and 1.74 WHIP across 35 innings, and he's firmly behind David Robertson in the bullpen hierarchy. Wick has allowed 12 runs (nine earned) in his last 10 innings.

  • Cubs' Rowan Wick: Saddled with first loss Saturday

Wick (1-1) allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits while retiring just one batter to take the loss Saturday against the Diamondbacks. Chicago's top two relievers struggled in this one, as David Robertson blew his first save of the season in the eighth inning. The game then went into the 10th inning tied, and Wick allowed a single and a double with one out that brought three runs across, though one of those runners started the inning on second base and another scored on an Andrelton Simmons throwing error. Despite the hiccup, Wick has been mostly solid this season with a 1.80 ERA and 18 strikeouts across 15 innings, though his 1.53 WHIP is a bit high, in large part due to his seven walks so far.

  • Cubs' Rowan Wick: Logs shaky save

Wick saved Saturday's 4-2 win against the Diamondbacks, allowing one run on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts in one inning. After Chicago scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to take the lead, Wick was brought in for the save and permitted the first two batters to reach base, bringing the tying run to the plate. The 29-year-old was able to retaliate and strike out three of the next four batters -- surrendering a run-scoring single as well -- to secure the victory. Wick has now registered three of Chicago's last four saves and has struck out an impressive 17 batters in 12.2 innings while posting a 1.42 ERA.

  • Cubs' Rowan Wick: Earns second save

Wick worked around two hits to log two scoreless innings and earn the save Wednesday against the Padres. He struck out two. Regular closer David Robertson hit the injured list Monday for undisclosed reasons, which fits the pattern teams have used when a player lands on the COVID-19 injured list. Wick appears to be next in line, as he saw the first save opportunity in the former's absence. Robertson has been lights out this year with a 1.50 ERA, though Wick has also been stellar, as he now has a miniscule 0.77 ERA and 14 strikeouts across 11.2 innings to go along with two saves. It looks like both relievers should have fantasy value the rest of the way, though Robertson is the preferred option as long as he's seeing the bulk of the save chances.

  • Cubs' Rowan Wick: Strikes out two in relief win

Wick (1-0) earned the win in relief Sunday against the Rockies after tossing a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and striking out two. Wick struggled in his season debut after allowing one run on two hits with no strikeouts through two-thirds of an inning against the Brewers on April 7, but he has bounced back well since then and is on a run of three straight scoreless outings. He's given up three hits while posting a 5:1 K:BB over that aforementioned span, and he also has two holds.

  • Cubs' Rowan Wick: Works eighth inning Thursday

Wick recorded a hold in Thursday's win over the Brewers despite allowing a run on two hits while retiring just two batters. It was noteworthy that Wick pitched in the eighth inning, with veteran David Robertson getting the save in the ninth. Wick didn't pitch particularly well in his frame either, as Mychal Givens was called on to put the side away. Manager David Ross indicated that a handful of pitchers might get saves this season, including Wick, Robertson and Givens. This isn't great news for Wick's fantasy value, especially if Robertson pitches well and locks down the role early on.

  • Cubs' Rowan Wick: More competition for role

Wick now has another potential challenger for closer duties with the Cubs adding Mychal Givens on Thursday, per Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com. The Cubs have now added Givens and Chris Martin in recent days to bolster the bullpen. While Martin is probably more of a setup option after recording just one save in 2021, Givens looms as a bigger threat following an eight-save season. Wick still likely projects as the team's closer to begin the season, but this will be a situation worth monitoring.

  • Cubs' Rowan Wick: Closer competition thins

Wick's hold on the Cubs' closer job appears to be safer than expected after top rival Codi Heuer announced on his personal Instagram page Tuesday that he'd undergone arm surgery. The exact nature of Heuer's surgery is not yet clear, but he'll almost certainly miss a significant part of the upcoming season and could be out through the middle of 2023 if the procedure he underwent was Tommy John surgery. Wick looked like the favorite even before Heuer's injury, as he saved five games down the stretch last season, though his 4.30 ERA and 14.0 percent walk rate don't make him look particularly safe in the role. While Heuer seemed perhaps the most poised to take the job from him, other alternatives such as Brad Wieck and Manuel Rodriguez still remain. The Cubs could also add more bullpen help once the lockout ends.

  • Cubs' Rowan Wick: Earns fifth save

Wick fired a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one walk while striking out two to earn the save in the win over the Cardinals on Saturday. Wick entered the ninth inning with a one-run lead. After blowing the save in his last two opportunities, he successfully held the lead Saturday for his fifth save of the season. The 28-year-old has a 4.30 ERA and 1.35 WHIP with 29 strikeouts in 23 innings. He has three straight scoreless appearances for just the third time this season.

  • Cubs' Rowan Wick: Implodes in loss

Wick (0-1) allowed four runs on three hits and two walks over 0.2 innings and took the loss Friday against the Brewers. He did strike out two batters in the outing. Wick entered to begin the eighth trying to protect a one-run lead and failed in his pursuit. The right-hander struck out two of the first three batters he faced but couldn't finish the job. He allowed a base hit to knot the game at five and then loaded the bases before Kolten Wong drove in two more. Wick was then relieved of his duties and was charged with another run after the Brewers capitalized on a wild pitch from Dillon Maples. Friday's meltdown was pretty uncharacteristic of Wick, who came in with five straight scoreless appearances and had 12:2 K:BB over that span. The 28-year-old now owns a 4.15 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 24:8 K:BB over 17.1 innings. He should still be the top option to close for the Cubs despite Friday's ugly outcome.

  • Cubs' Rowan Wick: Strikes out side, secures save

Wick struck out the side to record the save in Tuesday's win over the Phillies. Wick needed 15 pitches (11 for strikes) to mow down the Phillies in order and record his fourth save of the season. Three of those saves have come this month, as Wick seems to be picking up steam after making a belated season debut Aug. 10 due to an oblique injury. Based on recent results, it looks like the 28-year-old has emerged as the team's top option at closer, with Codi Heuer and Manuel Rodriguez also in the mix.

  • Cubs' Rowan Wick: Collects another save

Wick fired two scoreless innings to pick up his third save of the season Sunday against the Pirates. He did not allow a hit but walked and struck out two batters each. Wick took the mound in the eighth with a three-run lead and was able to hold the Pirates off the board the rest of the way. He pitched a quick 1-2-3 inning and then worked around two walks in the ninth to close it out. Wick has picked up all three of his saves over his last four appearances since Aug. 31 and owns a 3.09 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP and 15:6 K:BB over 11.2 innings since returning from the 60-day injured list Aug. 10.

  • Cubs' Rowan Wick: Picks up second save

Wick struck out the side in a perfect ninth inning to earn the save in Friday's 6-5 win over Pittsburgh. The 28-year-old's clean inning was a solid bounce-back effort after he blew a save Thursday against this same Pittsburgh team. Wick has a 3.72 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 13:4 K:BB across 9.2 innings this season while adding two saves, a hold and a blown save. He's worked his way into the Cubs' closer committee for the final month of the season.

  • Cubs' Rowan Wick: Notches first save

Wick fired a perfect ninth inning, striking out two to earn the save in the win over the Twins on Tuesday. Wick entered the game with a two-run lead in the ninth inning. He retired the side and struck out the final two batters. After trading Craig Kimbrel to the White Sox, the Cubs have a clear void at the back end of the bullpen. This was Wick's first save opportunity of the season, as he missed the majority of the year with an oblique injury. He has a 3.52 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in just 7.2 innings.

  • Cubs' Rowan Wick: Returns from injury

Wick (oblique) was activated off the 60-day injured list Tuesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. Wick was supposed to be one of Craig Kimbrel's top setup men this season but wound up being sidelined for the majority of the season. He returns to a team that dealt not only Kimbrel but several other key pieces at the deadline, which could lead to a wide-open closer competition down the stretch. Wick has a chance to move into the role, as he has six career saves to go along with a 3.20 ERA in 59 career major-league innings.
