Padres' Webster Rivas: Recalled Friday
Rivas was recalled from Triple-A El Paso on Friday. With a thumb strain ending Austin Nola's season, Rivas will rejoin the big-league roster to lend a hand with the catching duties during the closing stretch of the season. Rivas was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday. Rivas had served in a depth role behind the dish recently, and he hit .222 with a homer, four runs, three RBI and eight strikeouts in 10 games since July 1. Padres' Webster Rivas: Swats second home run
Rivas went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run and a strikeout in Sunday's 11-1 win over the Phillies. Rivas has had limited playing time behind Victor Caratini recently, but he hit his first home run since May 30 to extend the Padres' lead in Sunday's blowout victory. The 29-year-old has hit .205 with two home runs, four RBI and three runs across 14 appearances this year, and he should continue to serve as the backup catcher until Austin Nola (knee) is cleared to return.... Rivas went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 7-4 loss to Houston. The 30-year-old catcher accounted for San Diego's only run off Zack Greinke on Sunday, a fifth-inning solo shot. Rivas' contract was selected by the Padres on Friday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Rivas has been in the minors for 11 seasons, but he'll make his major-league debut behind the plate Friday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
