Player Outlook
Josh Naylor had a career season at the plate despite missing over a month with an oblique injury. The career year was fueled by a few things Naylor had never done, such as hitting .363 with runners in scoring position and hitting .299 against left-handed pitching. He also fully leaned into the roster trend of better contact as Naylor lowered his strikeout rate for a fourth consecutive full season. He also murdered fastballs hitting .352 (.317 xBA.) The amalgamation of those skills is what allowed him to drive in 90+ runs with fewer than 20 homers, something only Naylor, Abreu, Heim, and Bohm did in 2023 and something last done by Asdrubel Cabrera in 2019. In all, Naylor plated 22% of his baserunners, which was only bested by Heim, Mullins, and Seager last season. All of this is to say this big step forward needs to have that first 500+ plate appearance offseason to offset the regression which is likely coming to his run production.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: Does a bit of everything

Naylor went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run, two walks and a stolen base during Tuesday's 7-4 win over the Rangers. Naylor took part in the Guardians' six-run second inning, plating Tyler Freeman and Andres Gimenez with a three-run blast. He also swiped his third bag of the campaign and boosted his walk rate to 10.4 percent. The 27-year-old has gone yard five times in his last 10 games and is batting .286 during that stretch.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: Continues power surge

Naylor went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Saturday in a loss to the White Sox. Naylor produced Cleveland's only run of the contest with a fourth-inning solo blast to left field. The first baseman has gone deep four times over his past seven games to push his season total to 11 long balls, tied for fourth most in the majors. Naylor is also tied for seventh in the league with 30 RBI while slashing .275/.358/.565 and registering an impressive 16:20 BB:K.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: Clubs 10th homer

Naylor went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 3-2 loss to the White Sox. Naylor has homered three times over his last eight games and now has 10 long balls on the year. The first baseman is batting .259 (7-for-27) with a 5:4 BB:K through eight contests in May. His career high in homers is 20 from the 2022 campaign, but he's on pace to shatter that mark in 2024. He's slashing .277/.364/.562 with 29 RBI, 20 runs scored and two stolen bases over 36 games this season.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: Lifts another homer

Naylor went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, a walk and two total runs scored in Tuesday's 11-7 loss to the Tigers. Naylor has gone 6-for-24 with three homers and seven RBI over his last seven contests. He was swinging a hot bat earlier in the season, but he's traded a bit of contact for more power in recent weeks. Naylor is slashing .276/.364/.553 with nine homers, 28 RBI, 18 runs scored, seven doubles and two steals over 34 games. With top prospect Kyle Manzardo slumping to begin his major-league career, Naylor should continue to play on a near-everyday basis between first base and designated hitter.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: Smacks homer No. 8

Naylor went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run during Sunday's 4-1 win over the Angels. Naylor entered Sunday's game 2-for-19 in his past five games but broke out of the cold spell with a 410-foot homer in the eighth inning off Matt Moore. With eight home runs through 32 games, Naylor is well on his way to a career high in the category -- his current top mark is 20 home runs over 122 games in 2022. He boasts a monstrous .263 ISO this season.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: Idle against lefty

Naylor isn't in the Guardians' lineup Saturday against the Angels. The left-handed Naylor will take a seat as fellow left-hander Reid Detmers starts on the hill for Los Angeles. David Fry will take over at first base and bat fourth.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: Swats three-run homer

Naylor went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run and an additional run scored during Tuesday's 10-9 loss to the Astros. Naylor launched his seventh home run of the campaign and scored multiple times for the second time this season. Even with Naylor's long ball, he's batting 3-for-22 (.136) over his last six games. However, he's added a pair of stolen bases and has struck out four times to three walks during that stretch.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: Records first steal

Naylor went 0-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Thursday's 6-4 win over the Red Sox. Naylor has gone hitless in his last two games -- it's just the second time this season he's been held without a hit in consecutive contests. He was able to pick up his first steal in three attempts this year with his lone trip on base Thursday. Despite the brief slump, he's still slashing .295/.366/.557 with six home runs, 20 RBI, 13 runs scored and five doubles over 101 plate appearances in a starting role at first base.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: Blasts another homer

Naylor went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and an additional RBI in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Athletics. Naylor has hit safely in eight straight games, going 11-for-33 (.333) with three homers and eight RBI in that span. The first baseman is thriving in the cleanup spot, slashing .329/.400/.630 with six homers, 17 RBI, 13 runs scored and four doubles over 85 plate appearances, but he's also been caught stealing on both of his attempts this year. Naylor has trimmed his strikeouts rate to 11.8 percent and upped his walk rate to 9.9 percent. He's never hit more than 20 homers in a season, but he's also never exceeded 122 contests, so an everyday role seems to be in part helping his increased production.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: Hits fifth home run

Naylor went 1-for-4 with a solo home run en route to a 10-2 win against the Athletics on Friday. Naylor's eighth-inning blast hardly had any impact on the outcome of the game, but it pushed his hitting streak to seven games and represents his fourth long ball across his last nine contests. The 26-year-old first baseman is now slashing .319/.395/.594 across 69 plate appearances on the year.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: Hits fourth long ball

Naylor went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's loss to the Yankees in Game 2 of a doubleheader. Naylor's solo homer came in the bottom of the ninth with the Guardians down 8-1, giving him his third long ball in his last four games. The first baseman continues to swing a hot bat to open the season, recording his fifth multi-hit performance in Saturday's Game 2 and pushing his batting average up to .341 in the process. Naylor already has nine RBI in April to go along with four homers and seven runs scored.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: Hits homer Monday

Naylor went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's 5-4 loss to the Mariners. Naylor's eighth-inning blast got the Guardians within a run, but the comeback fell short. He's hit safely in each of his first four games of the season, and he's knocked in a run in each of the last two. The first baseman is 6-for-16 with two doubles, a home run and three runs scored. Naylor may not get every start at first versus southpaws -- he's been in the lineup for one of the Guardians' two games versus a lefty starter, with David Fry taking first in the other.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: Solid start continues

Naylor went 2-for-4 with a run batted in Sunday against the Athletics. Naylor drove in Jose Ramirez in the eighth inning to tie the ballgame at 3-3, marking his first RBi of the 2024 season. In three appearances, Naylor is batting 5-for-12 (.417) with a pair of doubles and two runs scored while having struck out just once. With righty Emerson Hancock listed as the Mariners' expected starter, expect Naylor to be part of the Guardians lineup once again Monday.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: Looks good early in spring

Naylor has gone 5-for-13 over five Cactus League games. Naylor's five hits are all singles, and he's added three RBI so far. With Kyle Manzardo likely to start 2024 at Triple-A Columbus, Naylor's starting role between first base and designated hitter looks safe for now. Naylor broke out last year, batting .308 with an .843 OPS, 17 home runs, 97 RBI, 52 runs scored and 10 stolen bases over 121 contests. Depending on where Ramon Laureano ends up playing, there could be room for Naylor and Manzardo to coexist in the lineup at some point.

Naylor went 0-for-1 with a walk, an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored in Thursday's 5-2 win over the Orioles. Naylor was hit by a pitch and provided a sacrifice fly. He's hitting .339 (21-for-62) over 17 games in September, a span that's also seen him accumulate four of his 10 steals this season. Overall, the first baseman is at a .310/.352/.500 slash line with 17 home runs, 94 RBI and 50 runs scored through 113 contests.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: Collects four hits, drives in three

Naylor went 4-for-5 with one double, three RBI and one run scored in Friday's victory over the Rangers. Naylor struck out in his first at-bat but was outstanding the rest of the night, and on the season he now has a .312 batting average with 91 RBI. Naylor is in the midst of a full-fledged breakout in his third big-league season as Friday marked the fourth time he has had four hits in a game and the 12th time he's recorded at least three RBI this season. He's just short of the number of at-bats necessary to qualify for the American League batting title, but currently ranks behind only Corey Seager and Yandy Diaz in that department.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: Goes yard Monday

Naylor went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and a double in Monday's 5-4 extra-inning loss to the Giants. Naylor has hit safely in his last five games, going 6-for-16 (.375) with two homers and seven RBI in that span. He gave the Guardians a short-lived 2-1 lead with his third-inning blast Monday. For the season, the first baseman has 17 homers, 87 RBI, 27 doubles, 43 runs scored, seven stolen bases and a .307/.349/.509 slash line over 104 contests. He's been one of Cleveland's top hitters throughout the year and should see a near-everyday role over the last three weeks of the campaign.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: Not in Sunday's lineup

Naylor is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Angels. Naylor started the previous three games but will receive Sunday off after going 3-for-10 with a home run, three walks, five RBI and a stolen base. David Fry will handle first base in the series finale versus the Halos.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: On base three times Thursday

Naylor went 1-for-3 with two walks, one RBI and one stolen base in Thursday's 3-2 loss to the Angels. Naylor has gone 4-for-14 (.286) with two RBI and two walks over four games since he returned from an oblique injury. All four of his hits in that span have been singles, so it appears he still needs some time to get his power stroke in sync. The first baseman has a .305/.347/.492 slash line with 15 home runs, seven steals, 81 RBI and 41 runs scored through 100 contests this year. He should see the majority of the playing time at first base down the stretch.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: Returns from IL, starting Sunday

Naylor (oblique) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Sunday and is batting third as the designated hitter versus the Rays. Naylor has been sidelined for the past month with an oblique strain, but he's ready to rejoin the Guardians after a three-game rehab stint with Double-A Akron. The 26-year-old has a .306/.346/.500 slash line with 15 home runs, six steals, 79 RBI and 41 runs through 96 games this season, and he'll reclaim an everyday spot in Cleveland's lineup for the stretch.
