  • White Sox's Mark Payton: Joins ChiSox on minors deal

Payton signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox on Nov. 15. It's not clear whether Payton was given an invitation to big-league spring training. Payton got a cup of coffee with the White Sox in 2022 before playing for the Seibu Lions of the Korea Baseball Organization in 2023. • Mark Payton: Heads to Japan

Payton signed a contract Sunday with the Seibu Lions of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball. After electing free agency shortly after the 2022 season, Payton re-signed with the White Sox on a minor-league deal, but he'll presumably be freed from that commitment to head to Asia on what's likely a more lucrative contract with the Lions. The 31-year-old outfielder spent most of the 2022 campaign at Triple-A Charlotte before appearing in eight games for the White Sox during the final month of the season and batting .143 over 25 plate appearances.

  • White Sox's Mark Payton: Scores twice, drives in one

Payton went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored Thursday against the Twins. Payton drew only his second start since being recalled Sept. 24, and took advantage by collecting his first hits of the season. He has only 53 career plate appearances in the majors and has a 49 wRC+ in that span. Even if he sees an uptick in playing time across the final few games of the season, he isn't likely to make a major impact.

Payton's stay with the big club lasted just three days, with the 30-year-old logging a walk in his lone plate appearance over the weekend. The Reds designated Payton for assignment Monday. Payton will cede his spot on the 40-man roster to reliever Edgar Garcia, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding move. The 29-year-old posted a solid-but-unspectacular .281/.331/.446 slash line at Louisville this season and was behind all of Nick Castellanos, Jesse Winker, Nick Senzel, Tyler Naquin, Shogo Akiyama and Aristides Aquino in the Reds' outfield pecking order, so the organization's decision to drop him from the roster isn't overly surprising.
