Player Outlook
Seth Brown lost his place on the Athletics' 40-man roster in June after he posted a .557 OPS through 63 games, but he rejoined the big-league roster about a month later and had a .271/.312/.448 slash line the rest of the way. The turnaround was enough for the A's to tender him a contract for 2025, and the power potential is clearly still there as he hit nine homers in 61 games during the second stint. Brown was a 25-11 guy in 2022 and clearly still has that ability, but he hasn't shown that he can produce at that level in the majors consistently. Brown and his left-handed bat should see a fair number of opportunities against right-handed pitching early in 2025, but beyond that there are hardly any guarantees for his role and production.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Looks set for reserve role

Brown looks set to get playing time in both the outfield and first base in a backup role, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Brown is hitting just .200 (5-for-25) this spring, but looks set to make the roster as the fourth outfielder. Brown struggled to start last season, but hit .271/.312/.448 with nine home runs in 61 games after a stint in the minors. He should work his way into the lineup sporadically against right-handed pitching if he can build on last season's second half.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Avoids arbitration

The Athletics and Brown avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract Wednesday. There's no word on the financial terms of the deal, but Brown was due a modest raise after earning a $2.6 million salary in 2024. The 32-year-old slashed .231/.283/.379 with 14 home runs in 124 games this past season. Brown is likely to play a good amount versus righties again for the Athletics in 2025.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Productive showing in finale

Brown went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs in a loss to the Mariners on Sunday. Brown posted the only multi-hit effort of the afternoon for the Athletics in the season finale, his first performance with a pair of knocks since Sept. 6. The productive afternoon prevented him from heading into the offseason mired in a slump, as he'd gone just 2-for-24 over the prior seven games. The 2024 campaign was essentially a tale of two seasons for Brown -- he earned himself a mid-June outright assignment to Triple-A Las Vegas by posting a .189 average, .557 OPS and 33.8 percent strikeout rate over his first 63 games, but he generated a .271 average and .760 OPS across 61 games upon returning shortly before the All-Star break, striking out at a more modest 22.4 percent clip in the process.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Comes up clutch twice in win

Brown went 2-for-2 with a two-run home run and an additional RBI in Friday's 7-6 extra-innings win over the Tigers. Brown didn't start Friday, but he was one of four Athletics with multiple hits in the marathon game. The 32-year-old saved the day in the 11th inning with a game-tying homer, then came up big again with the walk-off hit, a single, to plate JJ Bleday in the 13th. Brown has seven multi-hit efforts over his last 10 games, going 16-for-35 (.457) with four homers and 14 RBI in that span. The surge has him up to a .251/.310/.421 slash line with 14 homers, 44 RBI, 29 runs scored and four stolen bases through 106 contests overall.

He's been swinging a hot bat over the past couple weeks, slashing .391/.442/.630 with three homers and 12 RBI in his last 13 games, but Brown remains a strict platoon player for manager Mark Kotsay. In fact, Brown has made just a single start against a lefty this season. Tarik Skubal starts for Detroit in the series opener.

Over his last six starts, Brown has turned in five multi-hit games while racking up 10 RBI over that span. Since being brought back up to the majors July 11, he's slashing .320/.381/.557 with eight homers, 25 RBI, 15 runs and a 10:27 BB:K in 136 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Rips go-ahead triple in loss

Brown went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple, a walk and a run in an extra-inning loss to the Rangers on Sunday. Brown provided one of four multi-hit efforts on the afternoon for the Athletics, and his first triple of 2024 drove home Shea Langeliers in the 10th inning to snap a 2-2 tie. Brown now has multi-hit tallies in four consecutive starts, with Sunday's three-bagger his third extra-base hit in that stretch. His hot bat dates further back, however -- factoring in Sunday's production, the veteran outfielder boasts a .375 average across his last nine games.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Three more RBI in loss

Brown went 2-for-5 with three RBI in a loss to the Reds on Thursday. Brown bookended the Athletics' offensive output in a wild 10-9 loss, opening the scoring with a first-inning knock that plated Brent Rooker and closing it out by driving in Rooker and JJ Bleday in the ninth to snap a 7-7 tie. The Reds will be glad to be rid of Brown, who pummeled their pitching staff for four hits, including two home runs, and seven total RBI over the final two games of the series. It's been a resurgent month for Brown overall, as Thursday's production pushed his August slash line to a stellar .305/.379/.475 across 66 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Goes yard twice in win

Brown went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI in Wednesday's 9-6 win over the Reds. He took former teammate Sam Moll deep for a solo shot in the fourth inning before clubbing a game-winning, three-run homer off Emilio Pagan in the eighth. Brown snapped a 16-game power drought with the performance, but in 34 contests since returning to the majors just before the All-Star break, he's slashing an impressive .300/.369/.540 with seven home runs, 13 runs and 19 RBI. Tyler Soderstrom (wrist) is making progress in his recovery but isn't expected to be back in the lineup until at least mid-September, giving Brown more time to rack up production as Oakland's primary option at first base before he gets some competition for at-bats against right-handed pitching.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: On base three times Friday

Brown went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run in a loss to the Brewers on Friday. Brown recorded the only multi-hit effort for the Athletics on a relatively quiet night for the offense, snapping a brief three-game hitless skid in the process. The 32-year-old is showing some modest signs of life at the plate of late, with Friday's performance his third multi-hit tally in the last six starts. That stretch is a microcosm of the improvement Brown has shown since being promoted from Triple-A Las Vegas on July 11, as he sports a .302 average, .873 OPS, eight extra-base hits, 14 RBI, six walks and 10 runs in the 94 plate appearances he's logged across 30 games over that span.

Brown is absent from the lineup for Thursday's contest against the Rays, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Tyler Nevin will play first base and bat seventh for the Athletics.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Three hits in win

Brown went 3-for-3 with one RBI in Saturday's 2-0 win over the Giants. Brown plated the Athletics' second run with an RBI single in the sixth inning, which was his third hit of the game. A stint on the paternity list explains part of Brown's limited playing time in August -- he's gone 9-for-29 (.310) over eight contests this month. He remains in a strong-side platoon role at first base, sharing the position primarily with Tyler Nevin. Brown is slashing .224/.280/.376 with 10 home runs, 29 RBI, 22 runs scored and four stolen bases over 275 plate appearances this season.

Brown flipped the switch for what has become an increasingly productive Athletics offense, coming through with the bases loaded in the first inning to give Oakland an early 3-0 lead. The outfielder continues to struggle overall in August, however, as he still carries just a .174 average during the month across 24 plate appearances.
