  • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Expected back soon

Gurriel (groin) is feeling better and expected to return to the lineup soon, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports. Gurriel has not been able to play since leaving Sunday's game against Atlanta with tightness in his right groin. There's no guarantee that the outfielder will be able to return Saturday or even this weekend, but it does appear he's not dealing with a serious injury, and it doesn't seem likely he'll be placed on the injured list as long as there's no setback.

  • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Held out again Friday

Gurriel (groin) remains out of the lineup for Friday's game in Detroit. Gurriel hasn't played since exiting Sunday's game versus Atlanta with right groin tightness. There's been no indication to this point that he could need a trip to the injured list, but clearly we're getting to that point where it's a possibility. Corbin Carroll will play left field Friday.

Gurriel is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Nationals. Gurriel was also held out of Sunday's series finale versus Atlanta, but there's no word of anything wrong with him physically. Corbin Carroll, Jake McCarthy and Pavin Smith will canvass the Diamondbacks' outfield Tuesday and Emmanuel Rivera will take a turn as the designated hitter.

  • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Not in Sunday's lineup

Gurriel was removed from the lineup for Sunday's game against Atlanta, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports. The 29-year-old was initially slated to serve as the designated hitter Sunday, but he was instead a late scratch with Christian Walker cleared to return after sitting out Saturday with food poisoning. Gurriel started the previous nine games and figures to be back in the lineup Tuesday in Washington.

  • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Drives in two more

Gurriel went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI in Friday's 3-2 win over Atlanta. Gurriel's two-run double in the first inning gave the Diamondbacks an early lead. It was the third consecutive game with multiple RBI for Gurriel, who's knocked in 10 runs over the last 10 games. His 35 RBI are second on the club behind Christian Walker's 36.

  • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Lifts offense in win

Gurriel went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Thursday's 5-4 win over Colorado. A listless Diamondbacks offense couldn't get much going against Rockies right-hander Connor Seabold until Gurriel hooked a two-run double in the sixth inning that ignited a comeback win. He's enjoying a bounce-back season in the desert, leading Arizona in slugging percentage (.546) and sitting second in RBI (33).

Gurriel went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's 7-5 win against Colorado. Gurriel popped a solo shot in the fourth inning to account for Arizona's final run of the game. The long ball was his eighth this month after he went deep just once over 26 contests through the end of April. • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Sits out series finale

Gurriel is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game in Philadelphia. Gurriel looks to be receiving a routine breather in the series finale after he started each of Arizona's last nine games either in left field or at designated hitter. Unless he's used off the bench as a pinch hitter, Gurriel will put his 13-game hitting streak on pause Wednesday. Evan Longoria will replace Gurriel in the lineup as Arizona's DH.

  • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Collects four hits

Gurriel went 4-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBI in Monday's win over the Phillies. Gurriel opened the game's scoring with a solo shot in the second inning and later added an insurance run with his eighth-inning RBI double. He's been terrific in May, going 25-for-63 (.397) with seven homers and a 9:9 BB:K while hitting safely in 15 of 17 games. On the year, Gurriel is slashing .321/.376/.562 with 22 extra-base hits and 27 RBI through 178 plate appearances.

  • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Possible waiver wire pickups

Gurriel went from hitting 21 home runs in 2021 to hitting five in only 47 fewer at-bats in 2022, and that sharp decline was widely presumed to be a product of the changing hitter environment. Only after the season did we find out he was playing through a wrist injury that required surgical intervention, and lo and behold, his power is back this year. He homered for the second time in as many games Tuesday and the sixth time in May. Hitting for average has never been a problem for him either, so don't be so quick to dismiss his .312 mark. His roster rate has already risen to a level that suggests you're too late in five-outfielder leagues, but at this rate, he should probably be rostered in three-outfielder leagues as well.

  • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Knocks homer in win

Gurriel went 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run home run in Monday's 5-2 win over the Athletics. Gurriel's two-run blast in the third was his fifth home run over the last 10 games, tying his output from last season over 121 games while battling a wrist injury for the Blue Jays. Despite the lower-than-expected production in 2022, the Diamondbacks were confident he'd rebound when taking him on in the Daulton Varsho deal. Offseason surgery appears to have been what was needed, as Gurriel is hitting .309/.371/.537 with six home runs and 23 RBI through 37 games.

  • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Sleeper hitters for Week 8 (May 15-21)

Gurriel has seen his production spike since the calendar flipped to May, giving him a batting average over .300 and an OPS near .900. The downside is he tends to sit once or twice a week, but with the Diamondbacks having the second-best hitter matchups, going against the Athletics and Pirates rotations, he'll make do with what he gets.

  • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Not in lineup Monday

Gurriel is not in the Diamondbacks' lineup for Monday's game against the Marlins. Gurriel obtained his U.S citizenship Monday and was excused from pregame activities. • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Possible waiver wire pickups

How do you go from afterthought to prime waiver wire pickup in just one weekend? Well, you bat .727 (8 for 11) with four home runs in that weekend, raising your batting average from .265 to .310 and your OPS from .685 to .885. Gurriel of course had a three-year run of Fantasy significance from 2019 through 2021 in which he batted .283 with an .830 OPS and a per 162-game pace of 30 home runs, but the power basically evaporated last year. He then went on to have wrist surgery after the season, offering hope that maybe he'd regain said power. Suddenly, it's more than just hope.

  • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Enjoys big day at plate

Gurriel went 4-for-5 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Saturday's 8-7 win against the Nationals. Gurriel's biggest hit came in the ninth inning, when he tied the score with a solo homer off Washington closer Kyle Finnegan. The veteran outfielder finished with his ninth multi-hit game of the campaign, with the four knocks establishing a season-high mark. Gurriel has been a nice addition for a surprising Arizona squad, posting a .300/.345/.464 slash line along with three homers, 15 RBI, 17 runs and a stolen base through 119 plate appearances.

Gurriel is not in the starting lineup Friday against the Nationals. Corbin Carroll (knee) is taking a turn at designated hitter.
