Keider Montero reached two new levels in 2023, and the young righty posted a 4.66 ERA and 1.37 WHIP while striking out 160 batters over 111.1 innings between Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo. The 23-year-old also saw 16 innings of action for High-A West Michigan, with the 127.1 total innings representing a new career high. Like a lot of young pitchers, Montero could work to cut down the walks a bit, but he flashed plenty of potential by recording a K/9 of 10.0 or above at each of the three levels he appeared at in 2023. The Tigers saw enough to add Montero to the 40-man roster in November and protect him from the Rule 5 Draft. He seems to be closing in on his MLB debut in the near future, though he will likely begin 2024 at Triple-A again to get some more work there. If Montero continues to miss bats and can reduce the free passes, a promotion may be in order at some point during the season.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Gives up three homers in loss

Montero (1-4) took the loss Friday vs the Twins, giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out five. Montero gave up home runs to three of the first seven batters he faced in Friday's loss to the Twins. He still managed to get through five innings, but Montero has now given up multiple home runs in three of his six career starts. The rookie right-hander has struggled as of late, allowing five runs in three consecutive starts and seeing his ERA go from 4.64 to 6.38.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Takes loss Sunday

Montero (1-3) allowed five runs on eight hits across 5.1 innings to take the loss Sunday against the Blue Jays. He didn't walk anyone and struck out three. Montero was hounded by Toronto leadoff hitter George Springer, who took him deep twice, once with a runner on. The righty has had some ups and downs so far in his rookie campaign. He allowed nine runs over 8.2 innings in his first two MLB starts, then followed that by allowing only two runs over 12.2 innings in his next two appearances. Montero has now allowed 10 runs across 10.1 innings in his last two starts. Based on prior results, the 24-year-old may be ready for another upswing, but fantasy managers would be wise to tread carefully due to his 5.97 ERA overall. Montero is penciled in to start again Friday against the Twins.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Allows five runs in no-decision

Montero did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 11-9 extra-inning win against the Dodgers, allowing five runs on seven hits and four walks with four strikeouts over five innings. Montero allowed the first batter he faced to reach base in four of five innings and yielded runs in the first, third and fifth frames. He had logged back-to-back quality starts but has now surrendered at least four earned runs in his three other outings this season. The rookie will take an uninspiring 5.47 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 23:10 K:BB across 26.1 innings into the All-Star break.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Dazzles in no-decision Monday

Montero tossed 6.1 scoreless innings but did not factor into the decision in Monday's game against the Guardians. He allowed three hits and a walk, while striking out four. Montero certainly pitched well enough to earn his second win in the majors, but Gavin Williams was equally as impressive for Cleveland, though the Tigers scored once in the eighth for a 1-0 win. After allowing nine runs over 8.2 innings in his first two MLB appearances, Montero has turned things around, allowing just two runs across 12.2 innings in his two most recent outings. The 24-year-old has good stuff, and given his recent performances, he may stick in the rotation for the foreseeable future. He's currently penciled in to start again Saturday against the Dodgers before the All-Star break.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Receiving second start

Montero is scheduled to start Monday's game against the Guardians in Detroit, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. He'll pick up a second straight turn through the rotation after he earned his first MLB win while limiting the Twins to two earned runs on six hits and one walk over 6.1 innings this past Wednesday following his promotion from Triple-A Toledo. Assuming he performs well enough against the Guardians to stick around with the big club, Montero will line up for one final start before the All-Star break next weekend versus the Dodgers at Comerica Park.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Called up, working in bulk relief

The Tigers recalled Montero from Tripe-A Toledo on Wednesday. Per Evan Woodbery of MLive.com, Montero is slated to serve as a bulk reliever for the Tigers in Wednesday's game against the Phillies, likely entering the game in the second or third inning once opening pitcher Tyler Holton exits the contest. Montero's lone prior big-league appearance came as a starter back on May 29, when he gave up four earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out five across 4.1 innings in a loss to the Pirates. Montero owns a 5.03 ERA and 1.70 WHIP over 13 starts with Toledo this season.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Likely to start Wednesday

Montero is expected to start Wednesday's game against the Phillies, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. While the Tigers haven't announced anything yet, they are listing Wednesday's starter as TBD and Montero was spotted in the clubhouse at Comerica Park on Tuesday. Mason Englert is expected to be optioned to Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move. Montero, 23, allowed four runs in 4.1 innings in his major-league debut versus the Pirates last month. It would appear Wednesday's appearance will be another spot start for the righty and he'll head back to Toledo after the game.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Recalled ahead of MLB debut

The Tigers recalled Montero from Triple-A Toledo ahead of his scheduled start in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Pirates. Because they designated Montero as their 27th man for the twin bill, the Tigers waited until after their 8-0 win in the opening game of the day before activating him. The 23-year-old right-hander will make his MLB debut Wednesday before presumably heading back to Toledo immediately after the start. Over his nine outings with the Triple-A club this season spanning 30.2 innings, Montero has accrued a 4.40 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 36:17 K:BB.
