  • Pirates' Wil Crowe: Blows game Tuesday

Crowe (5-10) took the loss in Tuesday's 9-8 loss against the Yankees. He allowed five runs on four hits and one walk without recording an out. Crowe entered the ninth inning with a healthy 8-4 lead but failed to record an out and suffered the loss. He allowed a solo home run off the bat of Aaron Judge to start the inning and then allowed the Yankees to load the bases for Giancarlo Stanton, who crushed a walkoff home run. The showing increased his ERA by more than half a run to 4.15 and is his third time allowing three or more runs in his last seven appearances.

  • Pirates' Wil Crowe: Notches two-inning save

Crowe allowed two hits and two walks over two scoreless innings Monday, striking out one and earning a save over the Reds. Crowe put two Reds on base in each of the eighth and ninth frames but escaped both threats to finish off the 6-3 win. He was 2-3 with a blown save and a 6.39 ERA over his 12 previous outings since he last recorded a save Aug. 2. The 28-year-old lowered his season ERA to 3.64 with a 64:34 K:BB through 56 appearances.

  • Pirates' Wil Crowe: Stumbles in loss

Crowe (5-8) allowed three runs on three hits and took a loss against the Brewers on Monday. He was charged with a blown save and recorded just one out. Crowe served up a game-tying home run to Garrett Mitchell in the eighth inning followed by Keston Hiura's walkoff blast in the ninth. The 27-year-old righty saw his season ERA jump from 3.12 to 3.51 after the rough outing. Monday was his first save chance since Aug. 2 and his first blown save since July 29.

  • Pirates' Wil Crowe: Picks up win

Crowe (5-7) allowed one hit and struck out one across 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the win Friday against the Reds. Crowe entered the game in the eighth inning with runners on first and second and allowed an inherited runner to score, which gave the Reds the lead. However, he threw a clean ninth inning and the Pirates rallied for a walk-off victory to give Crowe his fifth win of the season. Crowe has only one save since David Bednar (back) landed on the injured list, though he has picked up a pair of wins across his last five appearances. For the season, Crowe has maintained a 3.27 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with a 59:26 K:BB across 63.1 frames.

  • Pirates' Wil Crowe: Handed seventh loss

Crowe (4-7) took the loss during Sunday's 8-7 defeat at the hands of the Giants, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out one in 1.1 innings. Crowe navigated a clean eighth inning on 12 pitches, and manager Derek Shelton opted to stick with the reliever for the ninth after Pittsburgh took the lead in the top of the inning. A leadoff Evan Longoria single brought the winning run to the plate, and Thairo Estrada tagged Crowe for a walkoff home run with one out. The 27-year-old has now faltered in the ninth inning after submitting a stress-free eighth in consecutive games. Closer David Bednar (back) is due to return from the IL within the next week, which could spell the end of Crowe's chances to accrue saves.

  • Pirates' Wil Crowe: Picks up third save

Crowe struck out the side and surrendered a hit in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Tuesday against the Brewers. Crowe was called upon to protect a two-run lead and worked around a one-out single to tally his third save of the season. With David Bednar (back) unavailable, the closer role could be up for grabs in the short term in Pittsburgh. While Yerry De Los Santos once appeared to be next in line for save chances, Crowe followed him into the game Tuesday. Crowe has quietly had a strong season, maintaining a 3.16 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and a 56:24 K:BB across 57 frames.

  • Pirates' Wil Crowe: Takes third loss

Crowe (2-3) allowed one earned run on three hits while striking out three across 1.1 innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Tigers. Crowe struck out the side in the seventh inning but allowed three consecutive singles to begin the eighth. He's primarily been used for single frames in recent appearances, and even after taking the loss Wednesday, Crowe has maintained a 2.08 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 17:4 K:BB across his last 10 appearances.

  • Pirates' Wil Crowe: Grabs second save

Crowe pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Dodgers. David Bednar was called upon to cover two innings Monday, so he wasn't available Tuesday. Crowe was able to deliver his second save of the season, retiring Kevin Pillar and Mookie Betts on flyouts before ending the game with a Freddie Freeman groundout. Crowe has filled a versatile role in the bullpen this year, though his previous save was of the three-inning variety against the Cubs on April 13. He's at a 2.35 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 30:13 K:BB with a 2-2 record, three holds and two blown saves across 30.2 innings in 20 appearances.

  • Pirates' Wil Crowe: Solid as opener

Crowe allowed one earned run on one hit and one walk while striking out three across two innings Wednesday against the Cubs. He did not factor into the decision. Crowe served as the opener and worked two fairly effective innings before giving way to Mitch Keller. Crowe served up a solo home run to Ian Happ but struck out three of the final four batters he faced. While he started the season strong, Crowe has allowed seven earned runs across his last eight appearances spanning 9.2 innings, which has inflated his overall ERA to 2.74 across 23 frames.

  • Pirates' Wil Crowe: Falters Wednesday

Crowe (1-1) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and no walks while striking out one to take the loss Wednesday against the Brewers. Crowe entered the game in the seventh inning and immediately got into trouble by surrendering singles to the first two batters he faced. It appeared that he induced a potential double-play ball from the next batter, but Yoshi Tsutsugo failed to field the grounder cleanly. That allowed a run to score and the rally to continue. Prior to this appearance, Crowe had not allowed an earned run across his first 13.1 innings. Even after a bit of a struggle Wednesday, he still owns a 0.63 ERA and 0.98 WHIP with a 17:4 K:BB across 14.1 frames.

  • Pirates' Wil Crowe: Excellent in relief

Crowe (1-0) allowed one hit and struck out five across 2.1 scoreless innings to earn the win Thursday against the Cubs. Crowe entered the game in the fourth inning in relief of Bryse Wilson. He struck out five of the eight batters he faced and induced six swinging strikes on a total of 45 pitches. Crowe has yet to allow an earned run across five appearances and 12.1 frames this season while compiling a strong 15:4 K:BB. He has thrown multiple innings in each of his outings, but has been capped at around 50 pitches. As the Pirates search for an optimal combination in their rotation, it's possible Crowe enters the mix if he continues to prove effective in longer stints.

  • Pirates' Wil Crowe: Earns three-inning save

Crowe allowed one hit and one walk while striking out four across three innings to earn the save Wednesday against the Cubs. Crowe was called upon to pitch the final three innings of Pittsburgh's 6-2 win, and he was able to secure the first save of his career as a result. Though Crowe didn't earn a spot in the rotation to begin the season, he has already made three multi-inning appearances out of the bullpen. He has yet to allow an earned run across seven frames while also posting a solid 9:3 K:BB.

  • Pirates' Wil Crowe: Excellent in last start of 2021

Crowe pitched six shutout innings in a no-decision versus Cincinnati on Friday. He allowed just one hit and two walks with nine strikeouts. The right-hander saved his best start of the year for last. The three baserunners he allowed was the lowest total in his 26 appearances, while the nine strikeouts matched a season high. Crowe typically didn't have that much success in 2021, posting a 5.48 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 111:57 K:BB across 116.2 innings. He finishes the season with a 4-8 record, while a 4.4 BB/9 and a 1.9 HR/9 can explain most of his overall poor ratios.

  • Pirates' Wil Crowe: Takes loss against Phillies

Crowe (4-8) allowed three earned runs in 4.2 innings Saturday, giving up eight hits and four walks while striking out two in a 3-0 loss to Philadelphia. The righty, who has surrendered 25 homers in 110.2 innings, threw only 57 of 95 pitches for strikes Saturday. Crowe has completed six innings in just two of 24 starts. He has shown small glimpses of promise -- he threw five innings of one-run ball in his last start. With a 5.77 ERA and 1.63 WHIP, however, the rookie is little more than an innings eater at this young stage of his career.

  • Pirates' Wil Crowe: Fans five in win

Crowe (4-7) allowed one run on three hits and a walk over five innings Friday, striking out five and earning a win over Miami. Crowe earned his first win since July 30 with Friday's solid performance. The only run he allowed came on an Eddy Alvarez single in the second inning and it was the first time in his last five starts that he gave up fewer than three runs. The 27-year-old righty lowered his season ERA to 5.77 with a 100:51 K:BB through 106 innings. Crowe is lined up to face the Reds on the road next week.

  • Pirates' Wil Crowe: No-decision against former club

Crowe didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 10-7 win over the Nationals, giving up three runs on four hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out six. Facing the team that drafted him in the second round in 2017 before trading him this past offseason as part of the package for Josh Bell, Crowe didn't exactly take his revenge, tossing 46 of 78 pitches for strikes before getting chased from the game after a three-run fourth inning. The right-hander has lasted at least five innings only once in his last seven outings, posting a rough 7.36 ERA and 1.91 WHIP over that stretch, but his 29:15 K:BB over those 29.1 innings does offer a glimmer of upside, and Pittsburgh has nothing to lose by letting the 27-year-old take his lumps down the stretch.

  • Pirates' Wil Crowe: Struggles continue Sunday

Crowe surrendered seven earned runs in three innings of Sunday's 11-8 loss to the Cubs. He gave up seven hits and two walks while striking out one batter. Crowe may be better suited for the bullpen, but Pittsburgh's lack of starting options has thrust him into the rotation. He needed 68 pitches (39 for strikes) to navigate his way through three innings. He'll have to earn his way onto the starting roster in 2022, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him demoted to Triple-A.

  • Pirates' Wil Crowe: Another no-decision

Crowe didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the Cardinals after allowing three runs on five hits and three walks across five innings, striking out four. Crowe has tossed three straight no-decisions and has gone 0-2 with a 5.64 ERA over his last five starts, so he hasn't exactly been a reliable presence on the mound for Pittsburgh. He does own a 22:11 K:BB through 22.1 innings in that span, but at the same time, he hasn't fanned more than five batters in any of those five aforementioned starts. He's projected to make his next start in the upcoming weekend series against the Cubs on the road.

  • Pirates' Wil Crowe: Escapes with no-decision Monday

Crowe didn't factor into the decision in Monday's 6-5 win over the Diamondbacks, coughing up five runs on eight hits and a walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out five. The right-hander fell apart in the fifth inning, and Crowe exited the game on the hook for his eighth loss of the season until the Bucs rallied in the bottom of the seventh. He hasn't completed five innings in any of his last four starts, and Crowe will carry a 5.46 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 84:43 K:BB through 89 innings into his next outing.

  • Pirates' Wil Crowe: Lasts four innings Tuesday

Crowe didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against the Dodgers after allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while fanning four across four innings. Crowe has pitched less than five innings in his last three outings, but at least he's found a way to limit the damage and hasn't given up more than three runs in any of those starts. In fact, he's now gone five straight appearances without allowing more than three earned runs. Pitching deep into games remains a problem for him, but he has still posted a decent 3.72 ERA across 38.2 innings over his last eight contests.
