  • Padres' Bryan Hoeing: Steps up after rain delay

Hoeing (2-2) earned the win over the Pirates on Tuesday, allowing one hit and issuing one walk while striking out three batters over 3.2 scoreless innings. A lengthy rain delay resulted in Padres starter Dylan Cease being shut down after only one inning, and Hoeing was asked to step in to cover the bulk of the innings in Cease's place. The righty reliever performed well, giving up just a single and a walk while throwing 27 of 45 pitches for strikes over 3.2 scoreless frames. His performance earned him the victory as Pittsburgh was shut out by a combination of six Padres pitchers. Hoeing had a rough final outing of the first half, but he's bounced back with nine scoreless frames since the All-Star break. He's not used often in high-leverage situations but has been a versatile members of San Diego's pitching staff, making two starts and tossing three or more innings on six occasions overall. He's also had eight appearances of one inning or less and has recorded a 2.34 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 29:10 K:BB overall across 34.2 frames on the campaign.

  • Padres' Bryan Hoeing: Heading to San Diego

The Padres acquired Hoeing and Tanner Scott from the Marlins on Tuesday in exchange for prospects Robby Snelling, Adam Mazur, Graham Pauley and Jay Beshears, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Hoeing obviously isn't the headliner of the trade for the Friars, but he's still a strong addition to the bullpen. The right-hander has two starts in 16 big-league appearances this season and has a 2.70 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 25:9 K:BB across 30 innings.

  • Marlins' Bryan Hoeing: Returns to bullpen

Hoeing struck out a batter and gave up one hit over a scoreless inning in Saturday's 1-0 loss to the Mets. Hoeing had made a pair of three-inning starts in his final two appearances before the All-Star break, but the Marlins have moved him back to the bullpen for their first series of the second half. Miami don't have a fifth starter for Tuesday's game against the Orioles, so the right-hander could be part of the plan for that contest if the Marlins don't elect to call up a pitcher from Triple-A Jacksonville to start the game.

  • Marlins' Bryan Hoeing: Struggles against Astros

Hoeing (0-2) allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits and a walk while striking out one over three innings to take the loss versus the Astros on Wednesday. Hoeing completed three innings again, but the Astros established a large lead after the second frame. The 27-year-old has taken the loss in both of his starts since joining the Marlins' rotation, and he's not fully stretched out after throwing just 62 pitches (39 strikes) Wednesday. He's at a 3.16 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 21:7 K:BB through 25.2 innings over 13 appearances, though he's had more success as a reliever. It's unclear if Hoeing will remain in the rotation following the All-Star break.

  • Marlins' Bryan Hoeing: Getting another start Wednesday

Hoeing is scheduled to start Wednesday's game in Houston. Due in large part to the Marlins' lack of healthy rotation arms, Hoeing was thrust into a starting role in his return from the 15-day injured list Friday despite having pitched in relief in all but one of his prior 17 appearances with the big club and during his rehab assignment. Hoeing ended up getting piggybacked by Roddery Munoz in Friday's loss to the White Sox, with the former covering the first three innings and the latter handling innings four through seven. Hoeing tossed only 46 pitches Friday, but the Marlins will likely be counting on him to work deeper into Wednesday's contest. Munoz won't be available to work in bulk relief behind Hoeing, as Munoz is slated to start Thursday.

  • Marlins' Bryan Hoeing: Stuck with loss in return from IL

Hoeing dropped to 0-1 in Friday's 3-2 loss to the White Sox, allowing one run on five hits and one walk over three innings while striking out four batters. Making his first appearance since recovering from a hamstring strain that had sidelined him for over two months, Hoeing was surprisingly sharp over 46 pitches (32 strikes), but Miami's offense didn't get on the board until the seventh inning. Given the tattered state of the team's staff -- the Marlins have enough starting pitchers on the injured list to fill an entire rotation and then some -- Hoeing could continue to be deployed in a tandem with rookie Roddery Munoz, who worked four innings in relief Friday. Hoeing has been the more effective of the two arms this season, posting a 1.99 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 20:6 K:BB through 22.2 innings.

  • Marlins' Bryan Hoeing: Officially activated

Hoeing (hamstring) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list and is starting Friday's game against the White Sox. Hoeing was shelved May 3 due to a strained left hamstring, and after making five rehab appearances since June 14, he'll rejoin the active roster. While the 27-year-old is listed as Miami's starting pitcher, he shouldn't be expected to handle a typical starter's workload considering he hasn't completed three innings in any of his rehab outings and was used out of the bullpen before being injured. That being said, Hoeing has been utilized as a starter in previous seasons and could see multiple starts given the Marlins' numerous pitching injuries.

  • Marlins' Bryan Hoeing: Drawing start Friday

Hoeing (hamstring) will be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Friday versus the White Sox, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Hoeing has been used as a starter plenty in the past but has been deployed exclusively in relief in 2024 aside from a one-inning "start" on his rehab assignment. The 27-year-old threw 49 pitches over 2.2 frames in his most recent rehab appearance, so the Miami bullpen will be needed Friday. It's unclear whether the Marlins intend to have Hoeing gradually build up his pitch count in his ensuing starts, or if he'll just be making a spot start Friday before moving to the bullpen.

  • Marlins' Bryan Hoeing: Nearing reinstatement

Hoeing (hamstring) threw 2.2 innings in a rehab appearance for Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday and was seen with the team ahead of Tuesday's game against Boston, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Hoeing has completed five rehab outings with Jacksonville and has gone deeper than one inning in three straight appearances. While he hasn't officially been reinstated, it appears as though Hoeing will rejoin the active roster soon considering he's currently with the team in Miami.

  • Marlins' Bryan Hoeing: Throwing live BP

Hoeing (hamstring) is set to throw a live BP session at Single-A Jupiter this week, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Hoeing reported tightness in his hamstring during a rehab appearance in late May. After a couple of weeks off, Hoeing is working his way back to pitching in games, with a live BP session being one of the final steps before resuming his rehab stint.

  • Marlins' Bryan Hoeing: Lit up in long relief

Hoeing surrendered nine earned runs on 10 hits and no walks while striking out one over three innings out of the bullpen in Friday's 16-1 loss to the Brewers. Though he was spared the loss -- which went to fellow reliever Steven Okert -- Hoeing was responsible for most of the damage that occurred in the Brewers' 12-run second inning. He was charged with eight earned runs in the inning, then gave up one more run in the top of the fifth before being pulled from the contest. After the ugly relief outing, Hoeing's season ERA jumped from 4.18 to 5.17.

  • Marlins' Bryan Hoeing: Hit hard early in no-decision

Hoeing did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk over 4.1 innings against Atlanta while striking out two. Hoeing struggled right out of the gate, allowing hits to each of the first three batters he faced -- two of which went for home runs as Atlanta jumped out an early 3-0 lead. However, the right-hander would actually go on to retire 10 of the next 11 batters he faced before being relieved by Steven Okert with one out in the top of the fifth. It marked Hoeing's longest outing since Aug. 21, and he's now surrendered at least one run in three of his last four appearances, posting a 6:3 K:BB over that stretch.

  • Marlins' Bryan Hoeing: Optioned to Jacksonville

The Marlins optioned Hoeing to Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. After the acquisition of David Robertson from the Mets, Miami will send Hoeing to the minors to free up a roster spot. The 26-year-old righty has a 4.57 ERA and 1.35 WHIP through 45.1 frames this season and could return to the Marlins later this season if they need a fresh arm.

  • Marlins' Bryan Hoeing: Moved to bullpen

Hoeing gave up two earned runs on two hits while striking out one over 1.2 innings out of the bullpen in Friday's 5-2 loss to the Orioles. After making his final four appearances before the All-Star break as a starter, Hoeing looks like he'll settle back into a relief role to open the Marlins' second-half schedule. The Marlins have three off days coming up over the next two weeks and are also likely to get Edward Cabrera (shoulder) back from the injured list at some point during the stretch, lessening the need for Miami to keep Hoeing in the fold as its No. 5 starter.

  • Marlins' Bryan Hoeing: Beat up again in no-decision

Hoeing did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing five runs on five hits and three walks over three innings against St. Louis. He struck out three. Hoeing managed to get through the first inning unscathed despite allowing a double and two walks on 27 pitches. However, the Cardinals would get to him for five runs in the third, as the right-hander failed to retire five of the first six batters he faced, and he eventually surrendered a two-run blast to Nolan Gorman to top things off. Hoeing has now allowed five or more runs in back-to-back starts, giving up four homers over that stretch.

  • Marlins' Bryan Hoeing: Set to start Monday

Hoeing is expected to start Monday against the Blue Jays, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. The right-hander started a couple games after being called up by the Marlins in late April, but he's worked out of the bullpen over the past six weeks and has a 3.12 ERA for the season. Hoeing threw 34 pitches over two frames in his previous outing June 12, so he shouldn't be expected to cover more than three or four innings Monday.

  • Marlins' Bryan Hoeing: Collects first win

Hoeing (1-1) picked up the win Sunday against the White Sox, striking out one in a perfect eighth inning. With his team down 5-3, Hoeing got the call and breezed through the middle of the Chicago order on 13 pitches (eight strikes) before Miami struck for three runs in the top of the ninth. The 26-year-old righty has given up an earned run only once in his last 12 appearances, posting a 0.73 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 10:5 K:BB through 12.1 innings over that stretch, but his low-leverage role gives him little fantasy appeal.

  • Marlins' Bryan Hoeing: Scratched from start

Hoeing was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday against the Cubs, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. The Marlins have yet to announce a reason for the change of plans, but it's likely that Hoeing is dealing with some sort of injury or illness. Matt Barnes will be the first pitcher on the hill for Miami in what will presumably be a bullpen game.

  • Marlins' Bryan Hoeing: Solid against Cubs

Hoeing did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk over five innings in a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. He struck out four. Sunday's start was certainly a step forward for Koenig, who allowed four runs in 3.2 innings in his first outing against Atlanta. He lowered his ERA to 6.23 through 8.2 innings with a 6:3 K:BB. Hoeing has looked good in the minors this year, pitching to a 2.08 ERA with 20:2 K:BB in three starts with Triple-A Jacksonville. He should see at least one more turn in the Marlins' rotation, with Trevor Rogers (biceps) still shut down from throwing.

  • Marlins' Bryan Hoeing: Ousted after 3.2 innings

Hoeing (0-1) took the loss Tuesday, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks over 3.2 innings against Atlanta. He struck out two. Hoeing took Trevor Rogers' (biceps) spot in the rotation and made his first appearance of the 2023 season. His debut left plenty of room for improvement, although it did come against a tough Atlanta lineup. Through 16.1 career innings in the big leagues, Hoeing has recorded an 11.57 ERA and an 8:7 K:BB, keeping him off the fantasy radar for the time being.
