Player Outlook
As is their wont, the Angels promoted Caden Dana from Double-A to the majors for his big-league debut at the beginning of September. He made three starts, largely struggling to the tune of a 9.58 ERA, 2.03 WHIP and 8:7 K:BB in 10.1 innings before getting shut down for the year in what the team said was an effort to make sure he entered the offseason healthy. Dana was the second-youngest player in the majors (behind Jackson Chourio), and he turned 21 in December, so we shouldn't hold his struggles in the majors against him. He logged a 2.52 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 20.1 K-BB% in 135.2 innings over 23 starts at Double-A, and he was the second-youngest pitcher at that level to log 100-plus innings. He has the secondary pitches to succeed, with a plus slider and a good enough changeup, however his 94-mph fastball was tattooed by big leaguers (.621 wOBA, .481 xwOBA). The 6-foot-4 righty is still young enough to be adding velocity to his fastball, but that is not a given. Dana should spend the majority of the year in the big-league rotation, health and success permitting.

  • Angels' Caden Dana: Moved to Triple-A

The Angels optioned Dana to Triple-A Salt Lake on Saturday. Dana was wildly inconsistent across his three Cactus League outings. He surrendered three earned runs over 1.2 innings in his spring debut before tossing three scoreless frames in his second start. He then struggled again in his most recent outing, giving up seven runs in one inning while striking out two and walking four. The 21-year-old prospect will look to find his footing in Triple-A to begin the year and attempt to return to the Angels' rotation at some point this summer.

  • Angels' Caden Dana: Shines in spring start

Dana pitched three perfect innings Thursday, compiling three strikeouts against the Cubs in a Cactus League contest. The 21-year-old wasn't originally slated to start, but he stepped into that role after Jack Kochanowicz was scratched due to an illness. Dana thrived against Chicago, retiring all nine batters he faced on 36 pitches. He'd struggled in his first first appearance this spring, allowing three runs over 1.2 frames against Seattle.

  • Angels' Caden Dana: Optioned, shut down for year

The Angels announced Monday that Dana has been optioned to Double-A Rocket City and won't pitch for the rest of the season in an effort to ensure he enters the offseason at full health, MLB.com reports. Dana has been hit hard since being promoted at the beginning of the month, surrendering 11 earned runs on 14 hits and seven walks while registering eight strikeouts over 10.1 innings. While this isn't the type of performance he was looking for in his first taste of the big leagues, Dana was the second-youngest player in the majors (behind the Brewers' Jackson Chourio) before his demotion and could win a big-league rotation spot in the spring.

  • Angels' Caden Dana: Receiving another start

Dana is scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Rangers in Arlington. Dana is likely to stick around with the Angels in September as part of a six-man rotation, and a strong finish to the season would position the 20-year-old to begin the 2025 campaign as a member of the Opening Day rotation. The young righty produced a quality start in his MLB debut this past Sunday, covering six innings en route to claiming a win against Seattle. He struck out four and gave up two earned runs on two hits and four walks.

  • Angels' Caden Dana: Officially called up

The Angels selected Dana's contract from Double-A Rocket City on Friday. Dana will start Sunday's game against the Mariners after logging a 2.59 ERA across 135.2 innings with Rocket City this season. The 20-year-old is one of the Halos' top prospects, but he hasn't pitched above the Double-A level since joining the organization in 2022, although the organization generally avoids sending its top young arms to the hitter's paradise of Triple-A Salt Lake. If he performs well Sunday, Dana could stick in the rotation.

  • Angels' Caden Dana: Dealing with general fatigue

Dana hasn't pitched for High-A Tri-City since July 15 due to general fatigue, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. The 19-year-old righty has done more than hold his own in 68.1 innings between Single-A and High-A, logging a 3.56 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 89 strikeouts in 68.1 innings. He logged six-plus innings while striking out 25 batters across his three most recent starts. Dana hasn't been placed on the injured list, and the Angels are apparently just managing his innings in his first full pro season.
