  • Reds' Joel Kuhnel: Blows save, takes loss

Kuhnel (2-2) allowed two runs on two hits in Friday's loss to the Pirates. He was charged with a blown save and a loss while recording just one out. Kuhnel served up an RBI double to Kevin Newman and was charged with another run while Ross Detwiler was on the mound. The 27-year-old righty had allowed just two runs over his previous 9.2 innings but saw his ERA jump to 5.73 after Friday's short outing. He's blown two of his three save chances on the year. Alexis Diaz, who has two saves this month, recorded one out during the seventh inning.

  • Reds' Joel Kuhnel: Snags first career save

Kuhnel pitched a perfect inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 5-3 extra-innings win over the Diamondbacks. Tyler Mahle started with nine shutout innings, but the Reds' offense didn't support him well. Alexis Diaz and Luis Cessa each had chances to protect leads in the 10th and 11th frames, but both of them couldn't get the job done before Kuhnel made a two-run lead stick in the 12th. The right-hander now has a 3.31 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 17:3 K:BB across 16.1 innings after earning his first major-league save Tuesday. Despite his success in this contest, he's unlikely to see a significant spike in high-leverage chances.

  • Reds' Joel Kuhnel: Reinstated from restricted list

Kuhnel was reinstated from the restricted list Monday. Kuhnel was prevented from travelling to Canada for the Reds' last series versus the Blue Jays since he is unvaccinated, but he'll return to the team ahead of their four-game series against the Cubs. The reliever has pitched three innings this season, allowing one run on three hits and a walk while striking out four.

  • Reds' Joel Kuhnel: Placed on restricted list

Kuhnel (undisclosed) was placed on the restricted list ahead of Friday's series opener in Toronto. It appears Kuhnel is unvaccinated and unable to travel to Canada for the three-game set this weekend, resulting in his move to the restricted list. He should be back with the team for Monday's series opener versus the Cubs in Cincinnati.

  • Reds' Joel Kuhnel: Contract selected by Cincy

Kuhnel had his contract selected by the Reds on Sunday. Kuhnel was removed from the 40-man roster after the end of the 2020 campaign but will now receive another big-league chance with the Reds. He has a 4.97 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 12:5 K:BB over 12.2 innings during his major-league career.

  • Reds' Joel Kuhnel: Outrighted to Triple-A

Kuhnel cleared waivers Monday and was outrighted to Triple-A Louisville. Kuhnel pitched just three times this season, giving up a pair of runs in three innings of work. He's evidently not a significant part of the Reds' plans heading into 2021, though he could still wind up back on the roster to throw a handful of innings.

  • Reds' Joel Kuhnel: Heads back to alternate site

The Reds optioned Kuhnel to their alternate training site Monday. Kuhnel's latest stint with the big club lasted only two days. His demotion cleared room on the active roster for outfielder Aristides Aquino.

  • Reds' Joel Kuhnel: Optioned to alternate site

Kuhnel was optioned to the Reds' alternate training site Wednesday. Kuhnel spent four days on the big-league roster, allowing a pair of runs on a pair of solo shots in his season debut Sunday against the Brewers. He was removed from the roster to make way for Wednesday's starter Wade Miley (groin), who returned from a trip to the injured list in a corresponding move.

  • Reds' Joel Kuhnel: Recalled by Reds

Kuhnel was recalled by the Reds on Saturday. Kuhnel had been dealing with a shoulder issue back in spring training, but that's evidently not still bothering him. Kuhnel will likely start out in a low-leverage role for the Reds, as he's thrown just 9.2 career major-league innings.

  • Reds' Joel Kuhnel: Sent to secondary site

Kuhnel (shoulder) was optioned to the Reds' alternate summer camp site Friday. Kuhnel had been dealing with shoulder soreness back in spring training, though it's unclear if that's still an issue. He wasn't particularly likely to break camp with the team even if fully healthy, as he's thrown just 9.2 career big-league innings.

  • Reds' Joel Kuhnel: Dealing with shoulder discomfort

Kuhnel is dealing with shoulder discomfort and isn't throwing right now, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Manager David Bell suggested that Kuhnel could resume throwing soon. "Depending on how he's feeling next week will determine whether or not he picks up his throwing program."

  • Reds' Joel Kuhnel: Bullpen candidate

Kuhnel had a nice spring campaign, throwing 5.2 scoreless innings, striking out three against one walk and two hits. He's a dark horse candidate for the Opening Day roster, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Five bullpen spots are spoken for - Raisel Iglesias, Amir Garrett, Michael Lorenzen, Pedro Strop and Robert Stephenson are all safely on the team. The Reds could keep two or three more relievers, most likely three with the new 26-man roster. He throws hard and closed games in the minors, with decent but not elite strikeout numbers.

  • Reds' Joel Kuhnel: Battling illness

Kuhnel is unavailable Tuesday due to illness, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. Kuhnel isn't the only Red to be out with an illness, with Freddy Galvis also unavailable Tuesday. Kuhnel owns an unimpressive 5.19 ERA in 8.2 innings since making his big-league debut in mid-August.

  • Reds' Joel Kuhnel: Promoted to majors

Kuhnel had his contract selected from Triple-A Louisville on Thursday. Kuhnel will get his first taste of the majors after compiling a sharp 2.18 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 50:16 K:BB across 53.2 innings between Louisville and Double-A Chattanooga. The 24-year-old right-hander has some experience in the ninth inning (42 saves over the past three seasons), so he could work his way into a high-leverage role with the big club if his success in the minors translates. Jared Hughes was placed on waivers -- and claimed by the Phillies -- in a corresponding move.
