Cleveland designated Lavastida for assignment on Sunday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
Lavastida will cede his spot on the 40-man roster to lefty Logan Allen, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Columbus ahead of his scheduled start Sunday versus the Marlins. Assuming he clears waivers, the 24-year-old backstop could report back to Double-A Akron in the Cleveland organization. Lavastida was hitting .188 with no home runs and two stolen bases through his first 12 games with Akron this season.

Lavastida went 2-for-13 in 10 spring games and was unable to win the job of Cleveland's backup catcher. He made his MLB debut last season and went 1-for-12 in six contests. It appears non-roster invitees Cam Gallagher and Zack Collins are the finalists for the backup job behind starter Mike Zunino.

Triple-A Columbus activated Lavastida (hamstring) from its 7-day injured list Thursday and assigned him to Double-A Akron.
Lavastida, who was the Guardians' No. 2 catcher to begin the season before being optioned to the minors April 24, has been out of commission at Columbus since June 18 with a right hamstring strain. He'll get the chance to play regularly at Akron before potentially moving back to Columbus once he gets a few games under his belt.

The Guardians promoted catching prospect Bo Naylor from Double-A Akron to replace Lavastida on the Triple-A roster. Lavastida, who broke camp as the Guardians' backup catcher before being optioned to the minors April 24, is hitting .225 with 11 extra-base hits and two stolen bases across 147 plate appearances with Columbus this season.

Luke Maile (hamstring) will probably get that job when healthy, but it'll be Lavastida's to begin the 2022 campaign. The catcher spent time at three levels of the Guardians' minor-league system last year, posting a combined .289/.380/.456 slash line with nine home runs, 16 stolen bases, 51 RBI and 50 runs scored across 84 games. He still looked a little overmatched in a cup of coffee with Triple-A Columbus, but the 23-year-old should benefit from regular at-bats in the minors later in the season.

Lavastida gets his second promotion of the season after beginning the 2021 campaign at High-A Lake County before moving on to Akron in late July. Over the past month with Akron, the 22-year-old backstop slashed .300/.380/.463 with a 9.7 percent walk rate and a 21.5 percent strikeout rate in 23 games.
