• Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Goes to 60-day IL

  The Red Sox placed Sandoval (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Saturday. Sandoval's move to the 60-day IL opened up a spot on the 40-man roster for infielder Alex Bregman, whom the Red Sox officially signed to a three-year, $120 million contract. After he was non-tendered by the Angels early in the offseason, Sandoval caught on with the Red Sox in December on a two-year, $18.25 million contract. Sandoval underwent internal brace surgery on his left elbow in June and is unlikely to be ready to contribute for the Red Sox until the second half of the 2025 season.

  The Red Sox signed Sandoval (elbow) to a two-year, $18.25 million contract Friday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Sandoval underwent internal brace surgery in June and was non-tendered by the Angels last month. He will be sidelined until the second half of the 2025 season but nonetheless landed a contract from the Red Sox. It's a fit that makes sense on paper, as Sandoval has strong secondary pitches but a weak fastball, and the Red Sox's staff leaned on non-fastballs in 2024 under the guidance of new pitching coach Andrew Bailey.

  Sandoval (elbow) underwent successful internal brace surgery Wednesday to repair the UCL in his left elbow, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Sandoval was diagnosed with a high-grade flexor tear and a torn UCL in his left elbow after departing early from his start against the Dodgers on June 21. The left-hander is expected to miss at least a full year of action due to the injury, but because he had the internal brace procedure rather than Tommy John surgery, he could be able to shave a couple of months off his recovery timeline and return at some point after the All-Star break in 2025.

Sandoval put together his second straight quality start but once again was left with nothing to show for it in the win column, as the Angels didn't take a lead until the bottom of the seventh. The lefty struck out the side in the second and retired nine straight at one point before Jurickson Profar banged out a base hit off him with two outs in the sixth. Sandoval has now recorded seven strikeouts in consecutive outings, something he only did three times over his first 11 starts of the year. He'll carry a 5.00 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 71:28 K:BB (66.2 innings) into his next start, which projects to come against the Astros this weekend.

The lefty would allow just one hit and one walk from that point on before being relieved by Adam Cimber to open the seventh. It was a nice bounceback effort for Sandoval after allowing a season-high eight runs in his previous start.
