  • Giants' Jairo Pomares: Activated, promoted Saturday

Pomares (back) was activated from High-A Eugene's 7-day injured list Saturday and was assigned to Double-A Richmond.

Pomares began this season on the shelf with a back injury after being limited to just 18 rookie-level contests in 2023 due to quadriceps and back injuries. Despite the lengthy time off, the Giants apparently want to see if the 23-year-old is ready to try his luck at Double-A.

  • Giants' Jairo Pomares: Out with back injury

Pomares is on the injured list at High-A Eugene with a back injury, Jim Callis of MLB.com reports.

The 23-year-old Cuban slugger slashed .254/.330/.438 with 14 home runs and a 32.9 percent strikeout rate in 95 games at High-A in 2022 and only played nine games (all on a rehab assignment) in 2023 due to back and quadriceps injuries.

  • Giants' Jairo Pomares: Pulled off rehab assignment

Pomares (quadriceps) went 8-for-23 with two doubles and a 5:6 BB:K in eight rehab games for the Giants' rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate before being pulled off the assignment in late June.

Pomares has spent the entire season on High-A Eugene's 7-day injured list due to a quad strain but appeared to be close to rejoining the affiliate after he began a rehab assignment in the ACL on June 5. However, Pomares hasn't played for the Giants' rookie-ball club or another affiliate since June 24, perhaps indicating that he may have suffered a setback.

  • Giants' Jairo Pomares: Opens season on IL

High-A Eugene placed Pomares (quad/back) on its 7-day injured list Thursday.

Pomares sustained a quadriceps strain late in spring training and was also dealing with a back issue, so he is a few weeks behind Eugene's other everyday players. He'll remain at the Giants' extended camp in Arizona before reporting to the High-A affiliate. The 22-year-old outfielder slashed .255/.322/.437 with 14 home runs and 60 RBI across 383 plate appearances with Eugene in 2022.

  • Giants' Jairo Pomares: Dealing with multiple injuries

Pomares is dealing with lower-back and leg issues and will not begin the minor-league season on time, Melissa Lockard of The Athletic reports.

Pomares is a few weeks behind schedule, so he likely won't be ready to play until late April at best. It's unclear if he'll start the season at High-A Eugene or Double-A Richmond once he's healthy.

  • Giants' Jairo Pomares: Earns weekly honors

Pomares was named the Northwest League Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Pomares went 12-for-25 with two home runs, three doubles and six RBI in six games versus High-A Spokane last week. For the season, the outfield prospect is slashing .248/.324/.434 with 12 homers, 44 RBI, 45 runs scored and 17 doubles through 80 contests.

  • Giants' Jairo Pomares: Gets bump to High-A

The Giants promoted Pomares from Low-A San Jose to High-A Eugene on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old outfielder earned the call-up after a torrid first half of August -- he posted a 1.188 OPS over 13 games -- boosted his season-long slash line at San Jose to .372/.429/.693 across 224 plate appearances. Pomares' growth as a power hitter has been perhaps the most encouraging development about his stellar campaign, as he was mostly touted for his advanced hit tool and on-base skills heading into 2021.

  • Giants' Jairo Pomares: Mauling Low-A pitching

Pomares is slashing .363/.428/.676 with 12 homers, 38 RBI and 42 runs across 46 games for Low-A San Jose.

A bit of a forgotten man on the Giants' prospect list, Pomares -- who just turned 21 on Aug. 4 -- has been absolutely tearing up the Low-A West. Pomares missed the beginning of the season with a back issue, but he's been pulverizing opposing pitching ever since. Of course, there are caveats: a .445 BABIP, a 24.4 percent strikeout rate and little speed to speak of -- not to mention that he's basically repeating the level, having appeared in 14 Low-A games in 2019 before last year's minor-league season was canceled. Even so, head-turning numbers like these can't be ignored. Unless you're in a very deep dynasty league, you may want to take a wait-and-see approach with Pomares, but if he keeps hitting like this in High-A and potentially Double-A next year, the hype train will take on a lot of passengers quickly.
