Howard (1-0) earned the win in relief Thursday against the Cubs after striking out the side in a spotless inning.
Howard pitched the sixth inning of the season opener and was absolutely dominant -- he tossed nine of his 13 pitches for strikes. That said, the entire Pirates bullpen was lights out, allowing just one run across six frames between six hurlers. Howard is coming off the best season of his career in 2020, as he posted a 3.86 ERA with a career-best 1.24 WHIP across 21 innings (22 appearances).
Howard (2-3) allowed two runs on three hits while pitching just one-third of an inning to take the loss against the Cardinals on Saturday.
As part of a bullpen meltdown, Geoff Hartlieb came in and walked the first two batters he saw. Howard allowed both inherited runners to score and yielded two runs of his own to take the loss. The implosion squandered six no-hit innings from Mitch Keller and raised Howard's ERA to 3.66 through 20 appearances.
Howard was recalled from the three-man taxi squad Sunday, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.
Howard was unable to secure a spot on the Opening Day roster, but he'll join the active roster after spending time on the taxi squad. The 27-year-old should fill a low-leverage role out of the bullpen for the Buccos.
Howard was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.
Howard was plucked off waivers from the Rockies in October but won't be opening the season in the big leagues. He owns a 5.87 ERA in 23 career major-league innings.
Howard was claimed off waivers by the Pirates on Wednesday.
Howard threw 19 innings for the Rockies this season, struggling to a 6.63 ERA. The lefty's 25.3 percent strikeout rate was decent, and he struck out 28.7 percent of batters at Triple-A Albuquerque, so he could have a shot at a bullpen role on Pittsburgh's Opening Day roster.
Howard was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on Wednesday.
Howard has a 3.91 ERA in 42 appearances out of the Triple-A bullpen, but he has been much worse (7.56 ERA) in six appearances for the Rockies. He should offer bullpen depth over the rest of the season.
Howard was called up from Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday.
Howard was added to the 40-man roster and called up after the team designated Mark Reynolds for assignment. He figures to provide bullpen depth for the club after posting a 3.83 ERA and 1.52 WHIP across 44.2 innings in a relief role for Albuquerque this season.
Howard was reassigned to minor-league camp Monday, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports.
This isn't all too surprising. Howard spent the 2018 season with the Rockies but was non-tendered following the season. The 26-year-old southpaw will provide bullpen depth for Colorado.
Howard re-signed with the Rockies on a minor-league contract earlier this month, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.
Howard made four appearances out of the Colorado bullpen in 2018 but wasn't able to maintain his spot on the 40-man roster heading into the winter. He'll get the opportunity to compete for a bullpen gig with the big club in spring training, though it's most likely he'll end up at Triple-A Albuquerque to begin the campaign.
Howard was non-tendered by the Rockies on Friday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.

Howard was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday, Kyle Newman of The Denver Post reports.
Howard has spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Albuquerque, compiling a 5.06 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 80:34 K:BB across 96 innings with the Isotopes. He figures to provide additional depth down the stretch, though Howard's lack of big-league experience coupled with his underwhelming minor-league numbers suggest he'll be limited to low-leverage work.
Howard fired four scoreless innings for Triple-A Albuquerque on Saturday, walking two while striking out five.
Howard didn't miss a beat in his return to action after exiting his previous starts with an apparent injury. The 25-year-old owns a 5.21 ERA through 17 starts (74.1 innings) with the Isotopes this season.

The Rockies recalled Howard from Triple-A Albuquerque on Saturday.
Howard made his MLB debut out of the bullpen Sunday in the Rockies' 8-3 loss to the Diamondbacks, working around a hit in a scoreless ninth inning. The 25-year-old was deployed exclusively as a starter during his time at Albuquerque this season, so he should give the Rockies some extra length out of the bullpen. It's likely that most of his usage will come in lower-leverage scenarios.
Howard was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on Monday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
The 25-year-old stood virtually no chance of cracking the Opening Day roster, as his presence on the 40-man roster can largely be chalked up to protection from the Rule 5 draft. Howard gave up seven earned runs in 12.1 innings this spring (5.11 ERA). He'll likely join the Isotopes' rotation after making his Triple-A debut last season and producing a 3.89 ERA in 14 starts.
