UFC star Conor McGregor says he'll box Floyd Mayweather for $100 million
Conor McGregor's requirement for a boxing match vs. Floyd Mayweather: A nine-figure payday
Conor McGregor dominated Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 to win the lightweight title and become the first UFC fighter to hold two belts at the same time. That performance begged the question, what's next for the biggest star in UFC?
Very few opponents currently in UFC seem intriguing for McGregor. A third fight with Nate Diaz is the top choice, followed by a lightweight title bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov. After that, there's not a lot there, which brings people back around to the idea of a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather.
Mayweather floated the rumor that he was negotiating a possible fight with McGregor earlier in 2016, but nothing came close to materializing. Mayweather recently said it was disrespectful that people were comparing him to McGregor.
That hasn't stopped the chatter around the potential super fight and McGregor chimed in this week, repeating a previous challenge: He'll get in a boxing match with Mayweather for $100 million.
"He wants it under boxing rules. He wants a boxing match. He doesn't want a fight," McGregor told the crowd at a club appearance, per TMZ Sports. "Tell Floyd and Showtime, I'm coming. Tell him to go to them Showtime offices. I want $100 million cash to fight you under boxing rules cause he's afraid of a real fight."
If you're scoffing at that number as impossible, it's not. Mayweather's long-awaited bout with Manny Pacquiao saw both fighters rake in more than $100 million after setting a record for pay-per-view buys with 4.4 million at $100/$80 for the HD/SD broadcasts.
Whether a McGregor-Mayweather bout would create the same amount of excitement and revenue as Mayweather-Pacquaio is something we won't know unless it happens, but considering both are the PPV kings of their respective sports those numbers are not beyond the realm of possibility.
If it were to go down, UFC boss Dana White left no doubt about where he'd put his money.
"Conor McGregor, if he touches you, you go to sleep," White said via TMZ. "Floyd puts people to sleep too, with his fighting style, not with his hands. You know how Floyd knocks people out? When they're not looking. Watch the Victor Ortiz fight.
"This kid's just getting started. This kid's 28 years old. Floyd can say what he wants about Conor, but even other fighters have to respect him. He's special. Floyd's never even come close to doing to other fighters what Conor does."
