Faried tallied 25 points (11-13 FG, 1-1 3Pt, 2-2 FT), seven rebounds, an assist and a block across 19 minutes in Wednesday's 122-104 preseason win over the Lakers.
To say Faried was locked in would be an understatement, considering he averaged well over a point per minute on the floor and misfired on just two of his whopping 13 attempts in 19 minutes. The veteran big man is in the midst of what has been termed by head coach Mike Malone as an "open competition" for the backup power forward job and certainly outshined Trey Lyles, who provided 12 points over 24 minutes while drawing the start Wednesday. While Faried's rebounding prowess gives him the upper hand in that department, Lyles brings an ability to stretch the floor that Faried can't come close to matching. The job battle will thus be an intriguing one to closely monitor as the exhibition slate unfolds, with the possibility that both players end up seeing their fair share of minutes throughout the regular season irrespective of the victor.
Faried is part of an "open competition" for the backup forward spot behind Paul Millsap, Harrison Wind of BSN Denver reports.
Wind's full article suggests the job is being fought mainly between Faried and Trey Lyles, who the team acquired from Utah on draft night. Coach Michael Malone also has the option of sliding Wilson Chandler and/or Juancho Hernangomez up to the four as well, though that may be more matchup-based. Faried's role as a high-energy rebounder at the power forward slot is largely being phased out of the league, though he's undoubtedly a quality player, averaging 9.6 points and 7.6 rebounds across 21.2 minutes per game last season. Lyles is being pegged as a stretch-four who made 0.9 threes per game at a 31.9 percent clip during 2016-17. The situation is more worth monitoring for deeper leagues, though there's value to be had in standard formats as well, especially with Faried's ability as a rebounder.
With the Nuggets out of postseason contention, coach Michael Malone will opt to sit 27-year-old Faried for the remainder of the season in hopes to get an extended look at some of his younger players. Faried, who was bothered by injuries this season and played just 61 games, will finish his sixth year in the league averaging 9.6 points and 7.6 rebounds across 21.2 minutes per game while knocking down 54.8 percent of his attempts from the field. In his place, expect Wilson Chandler, Mason Plumlee, Darrell Arthur and Juancho Hernangomez to all see additional run at the power forward slot.
Faried (back) is considered questionable for Tuesday's contest against the Mavericks, T.J. McBride of BSN Denver reports.
Faried sat out Sunday's game against the Pelicans after tweaking his back Tuesday. The injury isn't thought thought to be serious and it shouldn't be surprising if Faried is able to play. If he is held out once again look for Mason Plumlee and Wilson Chandler to see extra minutes.
Faried (back) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Thunder, Adam Mares of DenverStiffs.com reports.
After first suffering from back tightness in Tuesday's win over the Pelicans, Faried was able to play in the Nuggets' subsequent two games, but it appears the injury never completely went away. Coach Michael Malone will hope that a game off will be enough for Faried to get over the issue, but his absence will create a void in the starting five. It's expected that either Mason Plumlee or Wilson Chandler will draw the nod at power forward with Faried unavailable.
