The bond between the San Francisco 49ers and San Francisco Giants was on display Wednesday as coach Jim Harbaugh and QB Alex Smith served as drivers in the Giants’ World Series championship parade.

Harbaugh drove the car for first baseman Brandon Belt while Smith was responsible for chauffeuring pitcher Matt Cain.

Smith nearly drew a fine from the NFL earlier this season for wearing a Giants hat during a postgame press conference, which prompted Giants manager Bruce Bochy to wear a 49ers hat before a Giants game shortly thereafter.

“Great. Fantastic. All of our guys were watching Game 4 the night before the game,” Harbaugh said. “The team’s really gained a lot of inspiration from what the Giants have done this year. So many great team stories. So many great individual stories. And just champions.”

The 49ers would like nothing more than to have a similar parade in February.

“They’ve got great morale," Harbaugh said. "It’s just evident the way they enjoy each other’s company. The way they care for each other. The way they fight for each other. And it’s most impressive. And just as a fan watching it, [I'm] very, very inspired by it and moved.”

Giants great Willie Mays also paid a visit to a 49ers practice earlier this season and Harbaugh later visited Mays’ home with his father, Jack.
