Derek Carr won't answer his phone after training camp if he doesn't have extension
Carr is headed into the final season of his rookie contract and could soon sign a huge extension
Derek Carr is the Oakland Raiders' franchise quarterback. He's heading into the final year of his rookie contract, so he is eligible for a contract extension this offseason. Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie indicated earlier this offseason that extensions would be in the offing for both Carr and star defensive end Khalil Mack, but more recently Carr reportedly expressed frustration with the slow pace of his extension talks.
Now, he's drawing a line in the sand.

While that might sound ominous, Carr did indicate that he's hopeful things will pick up and that he'll have a new deal by the time this is all said and done. (There's a reason our Joel Corry included Carr in his list of 10 stars who could sign extensions by the time next season rolls around.)

As a second-round pick, Carr's rookie contract paid out a total of only $5,371,801 over four years, the last of which will be the 2017 season. Considering the best quarterbacks in the league all have contracts approaching or in excess of $100 million with average annual values near $20 million, he's in line for a significant pay increase no matter what. Finding an agreeable value is likely more difficult for Carr than other franchise QBs though, specifically because he doesn't have the baseline high-dollar contract value of a top draft pick. Still, the Raiders undoubtedly know he is their future at the position, and the two sides figure to come to an agreement at some point.
