Just Because: Vince Lombardi teaches lesson in the power sweep
Vince Lombardi is one of the best coaches in NFL history. Here, he teaches us how to run the power sweep.
The 100th anniversary of Vince Lombardi’s birthday was last week, and to celebrate, we’re turning you on to a teaching lesson from the one of the best coaches in NFL history.
Here is the former Packers coach teaching you about the power sweep.
Some observations:
1. You’ve got to love Lombardi’s honesty on the power sweep: “There’s nothing spectacular about it.” Psst, I guess it depends on who you’ve got drawing up the plays and who you’ve got running them. Sure, the power sweep offense isn’t necessarily a factory that produces thrills, but if you can run it successfully even though the defense knows it’s coming, that’s impressive by itself.
2. Seriously, Vince, you’re using a blackboard?!? I’d much prefer to learn via PowerPoint presentation. Or, at the very least, an overhead projector.
3. Toward the end of the video, Lombardi’s discussion about what the guard and the fullback are supposed to do in the limited amount of space they share is fascinating. And I’m serious.
4. If you’re not an expert on the power sweep after watching the 10-minute video, well, then I feel sorry for you. Clearly, you don’t understand the game of football as well as Vince Lombardi (or you can just watch part 2 and part 3 and become a football savant like Vince and me).
