Two weeks ago, Tom Brady was asked about Donald Trump winning the 2016 presidential election.

"I hope so. That would be great," the Patriots quarterback said at the time.

On Tuesday, during his weekly radio interview with Boston's WEEI, Brady said those comments were taken out of context.

"I don't even know what the issues are," he said, via the Associated Press. "I haven't paid attention to politics in a long time. It's actually not something that I really even enjoy. It's way off my radar."

This all started when a "Make America Great Again" hat from Trump's campaign was spotted in Brady's locker.

"He sent it to me," Brady explained earlier this month. "I've known [Trump] since 2002. I judged one of his beauty pageants. Imagine that, I was a judge at a Miss USA pageant in 2002."

The two have also golfed together, according to Brady, who said Trump is competitive on the course: "You don't want to be against him -- you don't want to be on the other team with him."

Brady said that remark was an "offhand comment" to a reporter that has since taken on a life of its own.

"I try to have fun with certain things, you know, but some things a lot of times get taken out of context," Brady told WEEI. "I think you are just more careful with what you say because you don't want certainly a big headline with you as saying something that's going to take the attention away from your teammates or what you're trying to do. ...

"When you're speaking publicly and you've got a lot of people listening I think it's probably in everyone's best interest in today's day and age to say as little as possible. That's just the way it is and I think the way our culture is right now. Everything is really out there."
